Simply think that this is a one-minute “narration” outside the cascade of higher culture
Ordinary readers know that my “Higher Culture” VIP column is a multi-level and intricate exploration of art and cultural themes.I cover everything from music to movies to (sometimes) More important topics Such as airlines and mask regulations.
However, usually, they are about interesting and optimistic things. But they are more like a series of information, and you can think of it as a minute, rather than involving culture. The big picture is the same: after all, life (wherever you are in politics) is much more than politics. The late cultural warrior/blogger Andrew Breitbart, lest we forget, insist Politics is the downstream of culture. This is something I try to remember.
Besides, because we can now call it a weekend (hey, What the White House said! ), let us pretend that we are also on vacation, and then talk about music. Some interesting things, like the favorite songs of the band you admired and obsessed most when you were young.
For GenXer like me, this will fall into EightiesThe music that fascinated me the most during high school was Manchester, one of the most determined groups in the UK, which emerged from the independent environment of the past ten years, Smith.
The most important point: Yes, I promise to discuss more American pop charts related to 80s music in the VIP column at some point. Some readers have suggested/asked this content in comments and letters. Yes, yes, people.
OK.Now, like Lloyd Cole and Riot, I Told you in May, Smith After five years, it will no longer be a complete band. (They were active from 82 to 87.)
Over time, some players have changed, but the main band is usually considered singer/songwriter Morrissey (he was born Stephen Patrick Morrissey), guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Locke and drummer Mike Joyce.
A list of five songs makes a nice introduction for those who don’t “know” the band’s music for any reason. To be honest, you will find that most people think that there are only two members of the “Smiths”-Morrissey and Marr.

It’s not too much to compare this duo to Lennon/McCartney, their young friendship created a small band you might have heard of in nearby Liverpool. Morrissey may have contributed a higher percentage of words than the rest of the Smith band, but together with Mar, they created the tone and sound that make up the band’s music.
Marr is particularly good at designing layers of loops, effects and guitars, basically making most of their music through four studio records. (The most important thing is that if you listen to him, he does more than that. But I will study in depth Release the boy, Johnny Marr’s extraordinary autobiography, in a column that follows. )
Enough preamble. Let’s listen to some music!
Song #5: “Please, please, please, let me get what I want”
My generation’s peers may not know this song, which is a shame. If they really know it, it’s because it’s a groundbreaking part Pretty pink Soundtrack. But you should know and understand that it comes from the band’s “Louder Than Bombs” (87 years), this is my single double LP, and this is my first Smiths record.
#爱听板 Introduction
“Better than a bomb” (1987)

Song #4: There is nothing to say about “this charming man”. The perfect pop single.
Song #3: “Rushholme Ruffians” was released in “Meat Is Murder” in 1985, Genius.com share Some background meanings about this song. For me, it captures many of the emotions you dealt with when you were a teenager, and of course, Morrissey is a bit distorted.
(The version here is from Peel Sessions on August 9, 1984).
Song #2, “Ask”, happens to be my favorite Smiths song. This is the first one I remember wanting to hear over and over again, like Top 40 music I loved it before. With the power of this song, I bought an LP-something I have never done before. In the long run, this is definitely the right decision to change your life.
Now, I decided to throw other people’s favorite here. But I think this person has some insight into this topic-not only is he A hostBut he is alive exist Manchester. A friend of mine, David likes “there is a light that never goes out”, this may be my favorite Smith Studio LP, the third one is called “The Queen Is Dead” (1986).
As it happens, I agree with him, this is one of their best. “There Is A Light” almost perfectly combines hopeful and melancholic lyrics with the usual, lively guitar, and lift your spirits in between.
Wow, it’s really hard to do-it’s like pulling a tooth to shrink it to five, when the band makes you go through one of the most painful parts of life at once. But I will try it.
Today in 1988, #Smith Release the single “Question”
Like most of Smiths’s singles, it was not included in the original album. It can be found in the compilation of “The World Will Not Listen” and “Better Than a Bomb” (both 1987) pic.twitter.com/LhICiioam3

The fifth option is “panicFrom “louder than a bomb” (I should mention that second The compilation Sire, the band’s record company, was released after the first three LPs (the first one was called “The World Won’t Listen” and was released in the UK).
Or this entry could easily become “That joke is not funny anymore“Off “Meat Is Murder” (second album; don’t ask). Look? I really can’t decide.
But if not for the last studio album “Strangeways, here we come” (’87). I didn’t know that the band split before the release. Once the news comes out, it will take some time to digest the huge losses. But songs like this shine so brilliantly that the album has a lasting beauty; even today, it still holds a special place in my heart. enjoy!
You have it. Now, you have a certain degree of understanding of Smiths. What you do with it depends on where you start! Let me know if any songs inspire you to dig deeper in the comments.
