Speaking after the emergency cobra meeting on Sunday Prime Minister Described the situation in the country as “extremely difficult.”
He said that “like-minded” powers must work together to ensure that any new Afghan government will not be recognized without consultation.
Mr. Johnson added, “It is very important for the West to work together to make the new government realize that no one wants Afghanistan to become a breeding ground for terrorism again.”
The parliament will be recalled to discuss the situation on Wednesday.
According to reports, after the Taliban entered the capital Kabul, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani also fled the country for Tajikistan.
Mr Johnson said that the British ambassador to Kabul is “working around the clock” to ensure the safety of British nationals in Afghanistan.
He added: “Our priority is to ensure that we fulfill our obligations to British nationals, fulfill our obligations to all those who have helped the British in Afghanistan for more than 20 years, and let them leave as soon as possible.
“What we are dealing with now is probably the emergence of a new regime. We don’t know exactly what kind of regime it will be.”
Mr. Johnson also admitted that the U.S. decision to withdraw troops from the country “has accelerated things in the region,” but insisted that the troops “know that things would develop like this for a long time.”
The government said it would cooperate with the UN Security Council and other NATO countries to prevent Afghanistan from “returning to terror.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reduced its diplomatic presence in Afghanistan, but government workers are still providing assistance to British nationals in the country.
A spokesperson said: “We are doing our best to allow the remaining British nationals who want to leave Afghanistan to leave Afghanistan.”
