Bayern and the death of German legend Mueller -Considered to be one of the best football players, arguably the greatest striker of all time-was confirmed on Sunday morning at the age of 75. He has been battling Alzheimer’s disease since 2015.
“Muhammad Ali in the penalty area” scored 68 goals in 62 games for the West German national team and scored the winning goal in the 1974 World Cup final against John Cruyff’s Dutch team.
Muller also won the European Championship in 1972, and ranked third in the history of the World Cup as the best scorer, surpassed by Brazil’s Ronaldo and compatriot Miroslav Klose.
At the club level, he spent a very successful 15 years at Bayern from 1964 to 1979, scoring 566 goals in 607 games, including 365 in the Bundesliga. He won four times and won Three European Cup champions.
Muller is still the best scorer in Bundesliga history. The record for the most goals (40) he set in a single season in the 1971/72 season was only broken by Robert Lewandowski.
The defending German champions Bayern-who drew 1-1 with Monchengladbach in the 2021/22 season opener on Friday night-played their first game since Mueller’s death on Tuesday. They played at Signal Iduna. Facing opponents and DFB-Pokal holder Dortmund Park in the Super Bowl display.
The Bavarian Giants paid tribute to the iconic Müller before the kick-off. Each player warmed up in a jersey with his name and the famous No. 9 jersey.
Thomas Muller also held up a No. 9 jersey with his surname printed on it, because players and fans on both sides were in a minute of silence and the image of Muller was printed on the electronic scoreboard.
