BERLIN-The German Public Broadcasting Corporation said that Taliban fighters in Afghanistan shot and killed a DW journalist while pursuing his relatives.
Deutsche Welle said on Thursday that militants were searching house-to-house for the journalist who is now working in Germany.
It said that the second relative was seriously injured, but the others were able to escape, but did not provide details of the incident.
The director-general of Deutsche Welle Peterlinburg condemned the killing, saying it posed a danger to Afghan media workers and their families.
He said:
Yesterday the Taliban killed a close relative of one of our editors. This is an incredibly tragic incident and proves that all our employees and their families in Afghanistan are in extreme danger.
“It is obvious that the Taliban have conducted organized searches of journalists in Kabul and the provinces. We are running out of time!”
The broadcaster stated that the Taliban attacked the homes of at least three other Deutsche Welle reporters.
Deutsche Welle and other German media organizations called on the German government to act quickly to help their Afghan employees.
After occupying Kabul, the Taliban launched a public relations blitz, promising media freedom and pardoning all opponents.
However, a confidential UN document seen by Agence France-Presse stated that they are stepping up their search for people who will cooperate with the United States and NATO forces.
