DFormer EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier (Michel Barnier) plans to participate in the French presidential election next year as a candidate. The 70-year-old wants to challenge the current Emmanuel Macron, he said on TF1 on Thursday night. To this end, Barnier must first face the internal area code of his Conservative Party “Republican”. Agence France-Presse had previously reported on his ambitions.
In February of this year, Barnier established a working group in the French parliament, which sparked speculation about the qualifications of the presidential candidate. The former foreign minister announced in December that he would serve his country in a different way once the negotiations with the UK are over. He did not disclose any details at the time. Reuters learned from the diplomatic community in Brussels that Barnier is “actively examining his own opportunities” to participate in the 2022 general election.
Macron’s supporters may pay close attention to Barnier’s next move because there may be some overlap between voters. According to opinion polls, Macron and right-wing Marina Le Pen will now enter the second round of presidential elections. The French presidential election will be held in April 2022.
