Everyone has heard of Fortnite-even if you are not sure what it is.This online survival game has more than 350 million players worldwide, has accumulated a number of loyal followers, and has spawned a new generation of Sporty professional. Now, Fortnite’s popularity is being used to plant trees, spark conversations on STEM topics, and inspire vision for the future.
The “Makers of Difference” event is led by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), a global charity that is celebrating its establishment 150day Anniversary.beside guildThe e-sports collective co-owned by David Beckham, IET launched the “Gaming for Good” Fortnite tournament that started today.
“Future scientists, technicians, and engineers who might one day save the world are likely to be in front of their consoles today,” said Professor Danielle George, Chairman of IET.
An emerging eSports star is Henrik’Hen’ Mclean, who recently won the largest Fortnite tournament in Europe. When he was only 15 years old, his total income through Fortnite exceeded £200,000.
Today, as a member of Guild, Mclean will participate in a Fortnite tournament he has never experienced before.
In this game, players will be encouraged to cut down as many trees as possible. The “tree-o-meter” will track their progress, and the Difference Makers plan will plant a real tree to replace all the trees felled in the game.
“At Fortnite, we use wood as a building material,” Mclean said. “I never realized that through games, I can plant trees in reality.”
To ensure that the net impact of the game on the environment is zero, the carbon emissions generated by the gaming computers participating in the tournament-and the data subsequently transmitted to the world on Twitch-will be offset.
Throughout the competition, participants will discuss how the love of the game becomes the gateway to the STEM world, as the guild champion Mclean will compete with the famous Twitch content creators Gee Nelly and TN25.
“Difference Makers not only proves that games can be green, but they also show us how to find visionary people in the world in unexpected places,” said Michelle Tierney, Guild’s Director of Partnerships.
