Fahim Zazai, 42 years old, runs the Afghan community and welfare center Walsall It helped Afghans and other immigrant communities in the West Midlands.
“When the refugees arrived, we found that most of them had very few personal belongings and only clothes on them, so we had to ask the public for donations,” Mr. Zazai told the Palestinian Authority News Agency.
“We have received a lot of donations from different organizations and individuals. This is really positive. We have received more than we requested and it is growing.”
Mr. Zazai came to the UK as an Afghan refugee 20 years ago. He said: “That’s why I understand the feelings of people who arrive here. That’s why I have to help.
“I don’t want to see other people who are in a similar situation to when I first came. I didn’t get much support. When I started my life in the UK, I went through a lot of difficulties.”
Despite the generous donation, Mr. Zazai said that it is difficult to help everyone in need.
“It’s really busy, and it’s still busy,” he said.
“We can’t keep up with the number of messages and calls we receive. We receive messages from people in our hometown asking how we can help them.
“Most people want to leave and want information on how to apply for settlement in the UK.”
Vicki Offin, 44, is the fundraiser of Upbeat Communities, a Christian charity that aims to help refugees rebuild their lives in the UK.
They have been providing welcome gift boxes for refugees and organizing various activities.
Ms. Offen told PA: “The welcome gift box we provided is like our first contact. We introduced the refugees to all the things we can help them.
“The box contains toiletries, pens and useful general odds and ends.
“This is an opportunity to make friends with someone, just to let them know that we are here and can support them, help them find the community and become friendly faces and knock on the door.
“At the moment, we are still in the early stages…understand people and understand their needs so that we can provide personal help.”
The organization provides activities such as English courses and community integration, and helps people find temporary shelter.
“people Ms Offin said: “They feel so frustrated with what they have experienced. Many people have experienced trauma in their own country or on their journey, so we hope to take care of people’s well-being.”
“This is a place where we can do this and empower them.”
