The former District Attorney of Georgia faces misconduct charges for handling the 2020 Ahmad Arbery shooting. This is one of the latest developments in the case, as the beginning of the trial of the man defendant The method of murdering Abery.
NBC New York Report:
A grand jury in Coastal Green County charged former Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney Jackie Johnson for violating her oath of office and obstructing law enforcement officials.
Johnson is accused of using her position to protect Gregory and Travis McMichael, the father and son chasing Abery in the Brunswick community before participating in the events that led to his death. After footage showing the Arbery shooting went viral on the Internet, how the local government handled the matter was subject to stricter scrutiny.
Law enforcement officials did not bring charges against the two men or William “Rody” Bryan, who was a neighbor who joined the chase and filmed the encounter with his mobile phone. These people were released for two months, until the Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the case, because the video spread caused anger.
Elder McMichael worked as an investigator in Johnson’s office in the past. After the shooting, he left her a voice mail box.
The indictment stated that the former district attorney showed “goodwill and affection” for Gregory McMichael and claimed that she contacted the police responding at the scene and “instructed that Travis McMichael should not be arrested.”
TNBC also reported that the former official “maintained that she did nothing wrong” and that she “shieded from the case because Greg McMichael was a former employee.”
Johnson suggested appointing George Barnhill, an external prosecutor and district attorney, to handle the case. Barnhill refused to raise the charges. He wrote a memo to defend the three and claimed that Abery’s history of mental illness was the culprit in the incident. However, after Abery’s family pointed out that his son worked for Johnson as an assistant prosecutor, he also avoided himself.
In May 2020, two Green County Commissioners Allegedly Johnson’s office prevented the arrest of the McMichaels. One of the officials who made the charges, Dr. Peter Murphy, told reporters:
“After calling back and forth many times, her (Johnson’s) assistant told the investigator that a man named Rocky Bridges would not arrest anyone.”
Commissioner Alan Booker also gave a speech to the media:
“The police at the scene went to her and said they were going to arrest both of them. These are the police officers who are investigating at the scene.”
He added: “She shut them down to protect her friend McMichael.”
In the 2020 election, voters Ousted Johnson. It is believed that her handling of the Arbery case was the main reason for her failure.
The Ahmad Arbery shooting was the first in a series of black murders, sparking new conversations about American race and police brutality. However, his case is unique because the people who killed him were not policemen—they were civilians.
Nevertheless, many people pointed out that the local government seems to be trying to provide cover for McMichaels and Bryan. Both Johnson and Barnhill seemed to be eager to cover up this situation. But when this video went viral on the Internet, it prompted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the matter.
If it is discovered that Johnson is using her position of power to protect friends from the consequences, it will further prove that the Abery case is not just a murder; it is also an example of government corruption. The three are expected to appear in court in the fall of 2021.
