Dune Review: Timothée Chalamet is outstanding in a surreal sci-fi epic

Arrakis was once controlled by Leto’s rival Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard). The emperor, a “dangerous, jealous man”, is playing games with his powerful subordinates. By then Leto, Paul, and Paul’s mother, Mrs. Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson; Vulnerable, irritable and so sexy) Arrakis arrived, and it is clear that some forces are destroying Atreides’ house. As we all know, David Lynch was full of information dumps on Herbert’s book in 1984. The protagonists all seem to have just walked out of the salon. In contrast, the dialogue here feels relaxed and airy, and the busy humans are perfectly synchronized with the surreal sand scenes.

Every sexy dune has substance and style. Villeneuve and his photographer use a variety of peculiar aspect ratios. This means that your eyes constantly feel as if they are being pulled in crazy directions. Even before Paul took a helicopter and reacted to the spice in the air, he heard a voice telling him to go with the flow and experience a kind of ecstatic free fall. Some people think that this kind of free fall is spiritually detached. I call it “Very poisonous”.

Can Sand Dune be used as a home movie? Children who grew up in Star Wars may feel frustrated because a large number of battle scenes mostly take place on solid ground. George Lucas and JJ Abrams had a great time in the dark space between the planets. Here, the most lively encounter takes place in Arrakis, in the hot sun.

Nevertheless, young people will appreciate the fact that when a fighter is hit, their limbs will glow like an arcade machine. They will also enjoy the winking, super loyal Atreides assistant Duncan (Jason Momoa; Was given the best witticism in the movie), as well as a seductive shot of a sandworm (imagine the nose, crossed with a wild mushroom) and a cute desert mouse with big ears.

Purists will want to know whether Villeneuve took a casual attitude to the text. The answer is: only a few. Jessica is always strong-she is a big friend to a group of cold, psychic nuns. But here, she can carry out her own ritual battle.

Another change: Planetary Keynes, a man and part of a colonization mission, in the novel, now has a sly smile and a powerful fist. Kynes, brought to life by the black British actress Sharon Duncan Brewster, is one of the highlights of Dune.

Peter Jackson was wrong to divide the Hobbit into three parts. Villeneuve was right to break up Dune, although it did cause some problems. Herbert does not believe in the superman myth, on the contrary, the novel ends with the most obscure note. But the first half of this book certainly encourages us to regard Paul as a great hope. Therefore, what we saw in these 155 minutes was a bit tortuous and (if you didn’t know anything about the book) was misleading.

The audience thought, “Sod Paul! I would rather watch RuPaul!” and should hold on tightly. Something truly disruptive is coming.

Villeneuve described Herbert’s novel as his “Bible”, and Villeneuve himself, in the eyes of many science fiction fans, walked on water. At the risk of sounding like heresy, I think it’s too early to declare this company sacred. But I have been caught all the time, and I definitely hope to have part 2.

We don’t need miracles. We just need the audience to say: There must be light. A green light.
