DJan Hekel, the German ambassador to China and Merkel’s confidante, died within a few days of taking office. “We are deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the sudden death of the German ambassador to China”, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Monday morning“At this moment, our hearts are with his family and those close to him.”
When asked by Agence France-Presse, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not want to provide any information about the exact circumstances of the death.
Heck did not become ambassador to Beijing until the end of August. The 54-year-old lawyer was a foreign policy adviser to German Chancellor Merkel (CDU).
According to his official resume Heck is married and has three children.
