Members of the House of Representatives passed the George Floyd Judicial Enforcement Act in March, but the bill failed in the Senate. After months of negotiations, it has been weakened to the point of meaninglessness.
Mr. Booker said the Democrats can no longer make concessions. “We have come a long way from the George Floyd Act,” he was referring to the Democratic version passed twice by the House of Representatives.
The Chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Derek Johnson, said: “In a year different from the past, when the American people screamed, marched and demanded reforms in policing, law enforcement unions and partisan politicians chose to stand on the wrong side of history.”
President Biden responded with a statement:
I am very grateful to Senator Cory Booker and Congresswoman Karen Bass for their tireless cooperation with the White House, the civil rights community, and major law enforcement groups, and for their work in the Senate to establish a worthy George. Floyd (George Floyd) proposed a bipartisan bill to negotiate and make a legacy of tireless efforts. Regrettably, Senate Republicans have refused to implement the modest reforms that even the previous president supported, while also refusing to take action on key issues that many law enforcement officials are willing to address.
