At first it was speculated that perhaps he realized how stupid it was to fly across the globe to speak at a climate change conference when he could simply attend a virtual conference. Then, Newsom’s office claimed that he was dealing with “unspecified family issues”, and when asked by the media, his office would not elaborate. By Sunday night, his wife posted a tweet humiliating those who asked where the chief executive of the state was, calling them “haters” and telling them to “live a good life.”
On Monday, the California COP26 delegation declined to answer questions about how Newsom participated virtually or where he was. Late on Monday, Governor Eleni Kounalakis claimed that Newsom could not go to Scotland because he had young children.
