It’s that time of the year again, all the big-name flagship phones have been released for one year, and we are now preparing for the new phone release cycle, indefinitely.
Before we have a flagship phone, we need a new flagship chipset.
MediaTek held its annual summit on the 18thday In November, they will announce MediaTek Dimensity 2000 (or another name).
Two weeks later, it was Qualcomm’s turn to hold the Snapdragon Summit and announced that we hypothesized it would be called the Snapdragon 898 product, although it may be the Snapdragon 895.
Like the consumer technology industry, we already have a lot of leaks and rumors. So what do we expect from these two new chipsets?
Just to confirm this article, without confirming anything, everything should be done with a little salt.

Manufacturing process
Every year brings new small manufacturing processes. All companies are on 4nm this year, but Qualcomm and Samsung use Samsung fabs, while MediaTek uses TSMC.
Many people claim that TSMC is a superior solution and one of the reasons why Samsung made it SD888 and Exynos 2100 Poor thermal efficiency. Since the chipset has a similar CPU design this year, it looks like we will confirm it in 2022.
Last year, MediaTek adopted a 6nm manufacturing process, so they really improved their competitiveness by matching Qualcomm and Samsung with 4nm.
CPU
Last year, MediaTek used a lower specification design than its two main competitors. The performance is lower, but the price and Dimensity chipset provide a better battery.
This year, the designs of the three companies are almost identical. We haven’t confirmed the frequency, but they should all provide a similar level of CPU performance.
This year’s interesting upgrade is the switch from the four-year-old Cortex-A55 LITTLE core to Arm Cortex-A510The new Cortex-A510 is 35% faster than the old A55, its energy efficiency is increased by 20%, and its machine learning capabilities are increased by 3 times.
As for Arm Cortex-X2, it claims to provide a 16% speed improvement over the X1 core built on the same node, but it does not claim to improve power efficiency, which is worrying.
The new Arm Cortex A710 is more promising; although it only has a 10% performance improvement, it has a 30% increase in energy efficiency compared to the A78 on the same node.

Graphics processor
The huge difference comes from the GPU design.
Qualcomm will use Adreno, we assume it is called Adreno 730, and as always, little is known about its details.
MediaTek will also take a familiar route, this time it is ARM Mali-G710 MC10, which should be a considerable upgrade Dimensions 1200 Because it is two models with additional cores.

Samsung turned to AMD RDNA 2 GPU and things became very interesting. For Exynos chipsets, this may be a success or failure. Many people are optimistic about this move and believe that AMD GPU will have a huge performance improvement compared with Arm Mali.

Some of the early benchmarks have leaked, showing great improvements, but currently, there is not much to compare the content of each chipset.
A vivo phone with the device name V2184 recently appeared on AnTuTu with a score of 1,002,220, which is 16.7% higher than the Red Devils 6’s official highest score of AnTuTu, 858734.
The Samsung Galaxy S22+ equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 appeared in the Geekbench list, with scores of 1211 and 3193, but this was lower than my expectations for the final release of the phone. SD888 on OnePlus 9 Pro manages 1109 and 3487.

I might say this every year, but next year looks very exciting for flagship phones. For several years, the normal cycle of the four main performance cores has been improving, while the high-efficiency power core has remained unchanged, the same as the Cortex-A55. It was launched in 2017 and used for the Snapdragon 845 for the first time. All CPU cores have been upgraded this year, and it will be interesting to see how much this differs from performance in benchmarks and real life, but perhaps more importantly battery life.
This year also saw MediaTek go hand-in-hand with Qualcomm and Samsung. Their CPU designs are almost the same and match them, if it weren’t for TSMC’s 4nm manufacturing process to improve them.
Therefore, this makes GPU and manufacturing process the two main differences between chipsets. Qualcomm and MediaTek have adopted the usual methods of Adreno and Mali GPUs, but the AMD RDNA 2 GPU used by Samsung may have the greatest impact on the market.
This year is a bit disappointing due to poor battery performance and thermal throttling, and this is still my biggest concern. I hope these three companies have found a solution to this problem. I suspect Cortex-X1 is the culprit, so I hope the second iteration can solve this problem, but Arm’s announcement does not seem to indicate this. A smaller 4nm manufacturing process will also help, and it will be interesting to see if the TSMC process used by MediaTek offers them an advantage over Samsung.
