Turkish police arrested a man who was one of the main suspects in the murder of Haitian President Jovenel Moise in July.
Turkey’s DHA private news agency reported on Tuesday that the suspect, Samir Handal, was arrested at Istanbul Airport on Monday after arriving from the United States and transferred to prison, where he can be held for 40 days.
The DHA stated that Handal held Haitian, Jordanian and Palestinian passports at the time of his arrest, but did not disclose his age and nationality.
Haitian Foreign Minister Claude Joseph said on Twitter that he had called Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu to thank him for arresting “one of the people most interested in investigating Moiz’s death”.
Moise was shot dead at his home in Port-au-Prince on July 7. Although dozens of people have been arrested, the identity of the person who ordered the attack remains a mystery.
Last month, a former Colombian military officer wanted by Haitian authorities for assassination was arrested in Jamaica.
Three Colombians were killed by the Haitian armed forces in response to the attack, another 18 were detained, and two American citizens of Haitian descent.
The assassinations aggravated the already serious crisis in Haiti, which has suffered greatly due to lack of security, rampant gang violence and frequent kidnappings.
