  • Austria has ordered the lockdown of approximately 2 million people who have not been fully vaccinated.
  • Austria has One of the countries with the highest infection rate on the African continent, the 7-day incidence rate is 925 per 100,000 people.
  • In Germany, 436,000 people received injections on Tuesday, including 300,000 support boosters.

Data on Wednesday showed that Germans and Austrians are scrambling to get the coronavirus vaccine as the number of infections soars and the government imposes restrictions on those who have not been vaccinated.

Germany and Austria are among the countries with the lowest vaccination rates in Western Europe. With the winter sweeping across the European continent, Germany and Austria are now at the center of a new wave of pandemics.

The German Ministry of Health stated that 436,000 people received injections on Tuesday, including 300,000 vaccinations, the highest number in about three months. There are long queues of vaccination centers across the country.

Government spokesman Stephen Seibert said: “This is a sign that many citizens have recognized this need.” But he added that the vaccination rate is still not high enough.

Approximately 65% of Austria’s population was vaccinated against the virus, and approximately 68% of Germany’s population was vaccinated, far behind countries that were hit hard at the beginning of the pandemic, such as Italy and Spain.

Sabine Dittmar, a health expert from the German Social Democratic Party, said that if injections are carried out in the company, family doctors, mobile vaccine teams, and vaccination centers, she hopes that 1.4 million people can be vaccinated every day.

Official data show that in Austria, the number of vaccines vaccinated every day last week has jumped from about 20,000 in October to about 73,000, although most of them are boosters rather than first shots.

Austria has ordered the lockdown of approximately 2 million people who have not been fully vaccinated. It is one of the countries with the highest infection rate on the African continent, with a 7-day incidence rate of 925 per 100,000 people, compared with 320 in Germany. The total death toll due to the pandemic is 11,848.

Neighboring Switzerland does not impose restrictions on people who have not been vaccinated, but the success rate in new vaccination campaigns is low-it only persuaded 35,000 people to get the first shot last week.

Parts of Germany-including the capital Berlin-require all indoor leisure activities to provide proof of vaccination or recent recovery from Covid-19, and this restriction may be extended to the whole country at a meeting of officials on Thursday.

Germany also plans to make it mandatory for people who use public transportation or attend the workplace to provide a negative Covid-19 test or proof of rehabilitation or proof of vaccination.

German Chancellor Merkel said on Wednesday that the coronavirus situation in Germany is very serious.

Germany reported 52,826 new infections on Wednesday-an increase of one-third compared to a week ago, a daily record, and 294 deaths, bringing the total death toll to 98,274.

“It’s not too late to choose the first vaccine,” Merkel said at a meeting of German city mayors. “Everyone who gets vaccinated can protect themselves and others. If enough people get vaccinated, that’s the way out of the pandemic.
