- The number of new coronavirus cases per day has increased to 517,600.
- So far, the United States is still the country with the largest number of new cases, with 97,500 cases every day.
- The United Arab Emirates remains the most vaccinated country, with 89% of its population fully vaccinated.
Driven by the rapidly deteriorating situation in Western Europe and the United States, the Covid-19 pandemic got worse this week.
This is based on the global playback status of the AFP database.
-One million a day-
According to statistics from Agence France-Presse as of Thursday, the number of new coronavirus cases worldwide has increased sharply by 9% every day, reaching 517,600.
However, there are huge differences between regions.
In the United States alone, the number of infections has soared by a third, and in Europe it has risen by 9%.
However, cases elsewhere have declined, with cases in the Middle East and Oceania down by one-tenth, in Latin America and the Caribbean by 8%, and in Asia by 4%.
In Africa, cases have fallen by 32%, although this number has been biased by Botswana’s data revisions last week.
-Europe’s rapid decline-
Nine of the 10 countries with the fastest deterioration are in Europe (countries with populations of more than 1 million).
Cases in Spain and Denmark increased by 54%, and cases in Portugal increased by a little more than half.
Switzerland (45% increase), the Netherlands (44%) and France (43%) are not much better.
The Czech Republic grew by 38%, followed by Germany (36%) and Austria (32%), which will resume partial blockades on Monday.
The wave that passed through Western Europe this week-mainly due to good vaccinations-followed a sharp rise in the less-covered Eastern Europe in the past few weeks.
However, the confirmed cases only reflect a small part of the actual number of infections, and the counting practices and testing levels vary from country to country.
-The biggest spike-
So far, the United States is still the country with the largest number of new cases, with 97,500 cases every day, an increase of 33%, which is shocking. It is followed closely by Germany with 43,000 people (36% increase) and the United Kingdom.
On a per capita basis, the country that recorded the most new cases this week was Slovenia, with 1,107 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Austria (981 cases) and Croatia (887 cases).
-The death toll has risen-
The United States also has the highest number of deaths, with an average of 1,281 per day, ahead of Russia’s 1,235 and Ukraine with 664.
Globally, the number of deaths per day has also increased, increasing by 4% to 7,439.
-The biggest drop-
Eastern European countries that were hit hard at the beginning of autumn in the northern hemisphere recorded the biggest decline this week.
In Romania, cases fell by 45%, Armenia by 39%, Bulgaria by 32%, Estonia by 30%, Serbia and Lithuania by 26%, Moldova by 22%, and Latvia by 21%.
The Philippines recorded the largest decline in Asia, with the number of infections dropping by one-third.
-The fastest vaccinator-
Cuba again became the fastest vaccinated country in the world this week, vaccinating 1.39% of the population every day.
Among countries with a population of more than one million, Vietnam, Austria, Thailand, Taiwan and the Philippines are closely followed.
-Most vaccinated-
The United Arab Emirates remains the most vaccinated country, with 89% of its population fully vaccinated.
It is slightly ahead of Portugal (87%) and Singapore (86%), Qatar (85%), Chile (83%), and Cambodia, Spain, Cuba and South Korea (79% each).
Malaysia and Italy lead by 77%, ahead of Canada, Japan, Denmark and Uruguay (76%) and China, Ireland, France and Belgium by 75%.
