Two hippos test positive for Covid-19 at Antwerp Zoo Belgium The staff said this may be the first reported case of this species.
14-year-old Imani and 41-year-old Hermien have no symptoms other than a runny nose, but the zoo stated that as a precaution, the couple have been quarantined.
“As far as I know, this is the first time for this species. Worldwide, this virus has been reported mainly in apes and cats,” said Francis Vercammen, a zoo veterinarian.
Coronavirus is believed to have been transmitted from animals to humans, and has been proven to have been transmitted from humans to animals.
Pets including cats, dogs, and ferrets are infected after contact with their owners. In zoos, there are also cases of infections in big cats, otters, primates and hyenas.
The disease is also spread in mink farms and wild animals (such as deer).
The Antwerp Zoo is investigating the cause of the outbreak. The zoo said that zookeepers have not recently shown symptoms of the new coronavirus or tested positive for the virus.
