Azerbaijan transfers 10 prisoners to Armenia in EU-mediated transaction – EURACTIV.com

The two countries stated that after the two sides held talks with the President of the European Council Charles Michel, Azerbaijan handed over 10 captured Armenian soldiers to Armenia on Sunday (December 19) for the second time this month.

Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to a ceasefire on their borders on November 16, after Russia urged them to withdraw from the confrontation after the deadliest conflict since last year’s war.

After the worst battle since the 44-day war between the Armenian National Army and the Azerbaijani Army in the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave last year, Armenia has asked Russia to help defend itself. The war killed at least 6,500 people.

The National Security Agency of Azerbaijan stated in a statement that it had handed over 10 Armenian soldiers detained on November 16. It also released 10 soldiers in early December. At that time, Russia played a mediating role.

The Armenpress media of Armenia quoted the press secretary of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vahan Konanyan as saying that they announced the names of the 10 prisoners of war transferred in the second batch.
