review – As a tech nerd, it’s a foregone conclusion that once I buy a house, it becomes a tech labyrinth that tries or will automate as many tasks and conveniences as possible. One of those categories is security cameras, and I seem to be so fascinated by them that I decided I wouldn’t have any blind spots around my home. While I’m almost done, I still have a few blind spots to address, and this Reolink Argus PT Pro Smart 2K 4MP Pan & Tilt Wireless Camera should take me a step further.

What is it?

The Reolink Argus PT Pro Smart 2K 4MP Pan & Tilt Wireless Camera is well-equipped, compact and smart. It’s battery powered, and with the solar-powered option, it’s still powered. It features person/vehicle detection, night vision, two-way audio, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (5.8 GHz) support, and voice control via Google Nest Hub or Chromecast-enabled TV. You can save recordings locally to a Micro SD card (up to 128GB) and receive real-time alerts via the app, email and siren.

Specification

The camera body is made of plastic and is waterproof. The lens is at the front, and the connectivity and built-in storage options are at the back. The base for the mounting hardware is located below. Nearly the entire surface of one side of the solar panel is the panel, while the attached cables and brackets are on the other side.

Performance

The first important step in setting up your Reolink Argus PT Pro camera is to fully charge the battery. There is a red/green indicator light to confirm the charge level.

After the camera was charged, I mounted it on the side of the garage and mounted the solar panel to the back of the garage, where it gets plenty of sunlight. Here are my installation steps. (Ignore the white camera mount on the left. That was the last camera that failed)

Once the camera is installed, it is easy to connect to the app to set up and operate the camera:

The image quality of the Reolink Argus PT Pro camera is very good, and the pan and tilt work well. A solar panel keeps the battery charged, which makes this camera truly wireless. Person recognition works well, but it does detect movement other than people including squirrels, and when the lid on the canopy on my deck moves a lot because of the wind.

Overall, the Reolink Argus PT Pro is an excellent home security camera that has so far withstood the sun, rain, and freezing temperatures of New York.

what do I like

  • Build quality
  • Dual frequency
  • Excellent pan and tilt functions
  • it is truly waterproof
  • Excellent image quality and smooth video

what would i change

  • Maybe just a better way to run the solar panel wire from the camera through the mount

final thoughts

There are tons of companies that make security cameras, and most of them have similar capabilities. However, not all are created equal. I really like this Reolink camera. Connecting to my network is easy and works well. I’ve never had it disconnect from my network, which is amazing because I have a few other cameras from major brands installed and they disconnect every now and then. The image quality of this camera is very good, it has no problem in the sun, rain and cold. I would buy another one without hesitation. I give it a well done and two thumbs up!
