The New Economics Podcast: Are Fossil Fuels Funding the War in Ukraine?


At the time of recording, hundreds, if not thousands, of civilians were killed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and more than 2.5 million Ukrainians fled the country. Russian troops have been charged with war crimes after bombing a maternity hospital in the south. Allies of the Ukrainian president say Russia will only back down if Europe bans imports of Russian oil and gas.

But what does oil and gas have to do with the Ukrainian war? Will banning Russian fossil fuels really make Putin reconsider? What does all this mean for Britain’s soaring energy bills?
