Review – We all have things that excite us. You never seem to have too much of something, and as soon as something new arrives, you can’t help but tear open the package and try it right away. For me, it’s earplugs. Since I started writing for The Gadgeteer, I’ve had to control myself because it can get out of hand really quickly. Thankfully, Garry and his self-proclaimed “weird ears” because he’s always on the lookout for the right earbuds, and he’s commented a lot. I already own two sets of Bluetooth earbuds – an older pair of Jabras and a pair of Galaxy Buds. They both sound good, but the Jabras look big and bulky, and the Galaxy buds are okay, but they don’t have active noise cancellation (ANC), which is especially good for travel. Planning my vacation all summer, I decided to review these tiny new Soundpeats Mini Pro Bluetooth earbuds to get ready for the plane. I hope these little guys can turn my flying experience into an oasis of silence where all I hear is weird podcasts or happy silences about my very favorite cult, and that’s fine too.

Settings and Features
So I paired the Soundpeats Mini Pro Bluetooth earbuds out of the box without any issues with my phone and iPad. In a hurry, I didn’t see the instructions that came in the lid of the box. (Maybe I was distracted by the disturbing albino girl on the lid). I find it odd that there is no documentation – I mean there’s usually something telling you to add an app or visit a website to get directions, but I think I might just have gotten a box without directions by mistake. I decided to just download the Soundpeats app and I was so frustrated because I couldn’t get the app to find the earbuds. As it turns out, these earbuds don’t use the Soundpeats app — all functions are handled by long-pressing or tapping the earbuds.
Admittedly I’ll never get to grips with all the taps and long presses because I’ll never be able to keep all of them and each set of earbuds function slightly differently, I did learn how to turn ANC and transparency mode on and off when I tried to This is very useful when the wind is blowing while listening to music outside. I like to use the earbuds in transparency mode so I can hear the noise around me or if someone is talking to me, but when it’s windy the mic starts picking up the wind and it’s hard to enjoy the music. Would this be a factor if you ride a bike or motorcycle? possible. I haven’t tried making any calls when it’s windy, but I think the mic picks up the wind as it does in transparency mode. When it’s not windy, it’s nice to chat on the phone with the Soundpeats Mini Pro Bluetooth earbuds. Everyone can hear me with no problem, and I can hear them too.
The fit of the Soundpeats Mini Pro Bluetooth earbuds might be great for most people, but for me, they’re not my favorite. I prefer the fit of the Samsung earphones because you can screw them into the ear for a good seal. These Soundpeats are small and light (0.17 ounces each) and I don’t think if you have bigger ears, they’ll barely stick out because they’re so small. I have small ears and I had to swap out the earbuds for the smallest size, but they were still farther out than I expected. They felt like there was a grape in my ear. I (like Gary) have weird ears, so I’m probably not a size judge.
Soundpeats Mini Pro Bluetooth earbuds sound great! I think they sound at least as good as my Samsung earbuds. Obviously, these little earbuds don’t sound like over-ear headphones, but I think the size factor is a good trade-off. The ANC itself has a subtle hiss, but if you’re playing music or listening to a podcast, you won’t hear it at all. I tested the ANC when my son was playing video games with his friends and it was so quiet I could put them on my desk just to cover up those sounds.
I really appreciate the LEDs on the case and each individual earbud. They flash green, yellow or red depending on the remaining battery power. There are a lot of cases with this display, but having them on the earbuds themselves is very helpful.
I found the battery time to be pretty great too. I love using ANC on planes because the background sound of planes bothers me. These earbuds will last up to 5 hours with ANC on, so they’ll last you on most domestic flights. Without ANC, they’ll last 7 hours, while the charging case gives you a total of 21 hours of charging time. Disappointing is the charging time. After the battery is dead, it takes 1.5 hours to fully charge. Ideally, I’d like a fast-charging option like everyone else, where 15 minutes of charging will give you an extra hour of use. That’s handy if you’re on a super long flight.
One of the other features that was a little disappointing was the lag when I used them while playing games. I only play mobile games and it’s still a bit stuttering. I was surprised because the product page talks specifically about how advanced the technology is, and there shouldn’t be any lag at all. Since I’m not a gamer, it doesn’t make much of a difference to me, but if you buy them for this purpose, you should be aware that there is a very slight lag, which can be a little distracting for some .
