Growing up in Newport, Rhode Island as a child, I have many fond memories of spending quality time at the beach with my cousins in the summer, ice skating on the pond in the winter, and exploring nature trails in the Norman Bird Sanctuary in the fall. The island is a magical place all year round and is known for being a family destination. It’s a summer adventure park and has become a year-round destination with festivals, live entertainment and many fun activities for kids and families.

Stroll the Cliff Walk
Get out and enjoy the absolutely breathtaking views of Newport’s famous Cliff Walk. Suitable for all ages, some sections of the cliff walk are stroller-friendly, as well as more difficult rocky terrain for older kids and teens. this is a map Contains key information including entry/exit points, facilities and various points of interest. *Please note that due to structural damage to the Cliff Walk section, there will be a detour between Narragansett Avenue and Webster Street for the foreseeable future.
Save the Bay Discovery Center and Aquarium
Save the Bay Discovery Center and Aquarium It’s on again! Located in Easton Beach, it is home to more than 40 species from Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island. Get up close and personal with some dogfish, sea urchins, crabs and lobsters, seahorses, turtles and more for a fun experience for kids and families. After visiting the aquarium, you can take a walk on the beach and splash in the water.
Explore the Norman Bird Sanctuary
Norman Bird Sanctuary is a prized community organization and non-profit wildlife sanctuary. They have over 300 acres of diverse habitat and 7 miles of hiking trails. During the summer they offer summer camps, group walks and more for kids. A great place to take the kids to explore and discover the beautiful wildlife on Aquidneck Island. NBS is located in Middletown, a 5-minute drive from Newport.
International Tennis Hall of Fame
If you’re looking for a family-friendly indoor activity, check out International Tennis Hall of Fame. The Tennis Hall of Fame was the site of the first U.S. Open in 1881. The museum is open year-round and has a variety of exhibits and galleries. It has multiple interactive experiences, making it a great place for kids. Tickets can be purchased online.
Watch the sunset at Castle Hill
Castle Hill Lawn It is a favorite of locals and tourists. During the summer, you can sit on an Adirondack chair and enjoy a drink while watching the stunning sunset with views of Narragansett Bay and the Newport Bridge. There is plenty of lawn space for the kids to run around and play.
Visit Adamsburg
access adamsburg Take a guided or self-guided tour to learn about the history and restoration of the historic fort. Explore the walls of the fort and underground tunnels and learn about military culture, architecture and engineering dating back to 1824. There is also a 2.25-mile walk throughout the park, which is open year-round with views of Narragansett Bay and Newport Harbor.
Go for bad food at Newport Creamery
New England tradition, Newport Creamery Known for its “Awful Awful,” a thick milkshake that’s been popular since the 1940s. Choose from classic flavors like Chocolate, Vanilla and Coffee or special flavors like Oreo and Chocolate Mint Chip.

Green Animals is America’s oldest and northernmost manicured garden. It features more than 80 trim plants in animal shapes and geometric patterns, as well as a variety of flowering bulbs, perennials, annuals, and shrubs that are colorful throughout the season. A fun outdoor activity with the kids, a great place for a picnic. Tickets can be purchased online.
Cape Breton State Park
a beautiful beachfront, open gEnjoy incredible views on the east coast. A family-friendly state park perfect for picnics and kite flying during the warmer months. There are also hiking trails, picnic tables and restrooms (open May 31-October 31).
Ryans Family Fun
I have some fond memories of going to Ryans with friends as a kid. in downtown Newport, Ryans Family Fun It’s a great rainy day activity. With over 50 games and prize counters, there are tons of fun experiences for kids.
Sweetberry Farm
Not far from downtown Newport. sweetberry Home is a family favorite, with freshly grown seasonal fruits and vegetables including blueberries, blackberries and strawberries of your own choosing. Pick Your Own Seasons begin in June and continue through summer and fall. Sweet Berry has picnic tables for lunch, and the Farm Cafe offers a variety of breakfast and lunch options. They also have soft ice cream. Sweet Berry will reopen in late May.
Simmons Farm Petting Zoo
open to the public, Simmons Farm Petting Zoo Always a hit with kids of all ages. You can buy cones filled with grain near the Farm Stand and see dairy goats, ducks, geese and calves. Simmons Farm is also a protected land that uses organic practices for 350 years.
