Over the weekend of the bank holiday, a Czech named Petr Breneš managed to get his hands on a Garmin Edge 1040 and Post multiple videosincluding unboxing and several menu walkthroughs.
It’s unclear how he got the sample, and he doesn’t appear to be working for Garmin, but his Facebook suggests he’s an avid cyclist.
There’s a good chance YouTube will remove these videos, but I’ve embedded the link below and took a few screenshots.
Garmin forum users recently posted Garmin Edge 1040 Detailswhich confirms several characteristics, including:
- Significantly increased battery life, up to 70 hours in battery saver mode
- Improved navigation with the help of new multi-band GNSS capabilities.
- In general, the mapping should be improved thanks to the heatmap
- The Endurance feature we saw on Fenix 7/Epix
Garmin Edge 1040 and Edge 1040 Monitors
In one of his videos, he links to a picture on Facebook showing the display differences between the Edge 1030 and 1040. It looks like the display resolution is the same, or at least not much improved. Brightness and contrast do appear to be higher, but that’s probably a difference in settings.
Garmin Edge 1040 Unboxing

Out-of-the-box video quality isn’t the best, but it doesn’t confirm that the Edge 1040 uses USB-C, which could be one of the major upgrades people are looking for.
Rumor has it that the Edge 1040 has a solar version, which could boost battery life to over 100 hours. This particular sample does not appear to have any solar energy.
Garmin Edge 1040 Menu Walkthrough – Part 1.Hardware Appearance and Home Screen

In this video, we see the overall hardware design and the main widget menu. We also saw the MTB Trail Navigation option, but it doesn’t allow the screen to load properly, let’s see what it looks like.

Petr didn’t add any additional comments to the video, but one user pointed out that multi-band GNSS is featured. This is a given, considering that most recent watch Launch has it.

Again, in this video we see confirmation of multi-band GNSS and the different settings you can choose from. He also checks all the sensors you can pair with.
Garmin Edge 1040 Menu Walkthrough – Part 4.Active Screens and Fields

In the video, Petr shows us the vast array of data fields you can use in your campaign. Menu navigation looks smooth.
Garmin Edge 1040 Menu Walkthrough – Part 5.Active Profile and Data Screens

In this video, Petr shows off some activity and stats screens, including stamina and motivation guides. We’ve seen stamina on most recent watches. The power guide looks pretty new, I’m guessing this is something like Pespro Run with it to give you suggested power based on route and target time.
It looks like the number of data screens displayed at once is the same as the Edge 1030
comprehensive
Petr points out that the Edge 1040 is just a small upgrade, but it feels faster and more responsive. The display has excellent contrast. You get the multi-band GNSS and other software features we’ve seen on recent watches. There’s also the new Power Guide feature, and the bike computer now charges using USB-C.
Considering this Edge 1040 appears to be a complete retail unit, I expect the Edge 1040’s release to come soon.
