ingredients you need
This section explains how to choose the best toppings for Broccoli Bacon Cauliflower Salad, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. See recipe card below for measurements.
Broccoli Cauliflower Salad Ingredients:
- Broccoli and Cauliflower – Cut into small florets. If you are using pre-cut cauliflower or broccoli florets, you will still need to trim and cut them to smaller sizes. That way, they’re easy on the fork with other toppings, and you’ll get a little bit of each bite. If you only have broccoli or cauliflower florets on hand, you can use just one instead of both.
- Bell Pepper – Sweetness, color and crispness. I like the color contrast of the red bell peppers, but you could also use yellow or orange.
- cooked bacon – Make your own or buy ready-made bacon pieces. For the best flavor, I highly recommend making your own bacon (lots of options – Oven Bacon, Microwave Baconor Air Fryer Bacon! ) and crumble it.
Variation: try adding…
- cheese – Shredded cheddar or shredded goat cheese work well with different flavors.
- nuts or seeds – such as sliced almonds, walnuts or sunflower seeds. Great if you want some crunch!
- onion – diced red onion is a popular choice.
- dried fruit – such as raisins or dried cranberries. Be aware that a cauliflower broccoli salad with added dried fruit will be higher in sugar.
For the easy creamy dressing:
- mayonnaise – I prefer Homemade Guacamole (It only takes 5 minutes, tastes great, and the ingredients are clean!), but any store-bought kind will work too. If you want to lighten the dressing, replace half of the mayo with sour cream or even plain Greek yogurt.
- olive oil – Dilute the dressing. Any other neutral oil, such as avocado oil, can also be used.
- lemon juice – The acidity balances the creaminess.Use fresh lemon juice for best flavor or bottled For convenience. White vinegar or apple cider vinegar can also be used as an alternative to provide acidity.
- fresh thyme – Thyme leaves are suitable for fall and winter, but are available year-round. You can use other herbs at different times of the year, or omit them entirely.
- garlic powder – Garlic powder is usually better for a smooth and creamy dressing for salads. But if you prefer, you can substitute 2 cloves of minced garlic.
- sea salt & Black pepper – Adjust salt to taste. The amount needed may vary depending on the saltiness of the mayonnaise.
Variation: Prefer a sweeter dressing?
This mayo is very flavorful and not sweet. If you like broccoli cauliflower salad with sweet mayo, you can make a very similar one like I did This Broccoli Cranberry Salad, or just add a few tablespoons of your sweetener of choice to this dressing.I recommend Powdered Besti or Wholesome Yum Keto Honey As a healthy sugar-free option.
