Columbia Center for Sustainable Investing Summer Internship 2023

this Columbia Center for Sustainable Investing (CCSI), a joint center of Columbia Law School and the Columbia Climate Institute, is accepting applications intern position Summer 2023. Depending on the background and interests of a particular applicant, the intern will be responsible for one or more specific research projects.

Applications will be accepted until March 1, and the internship can be completed remotely.

CCSI is a leading applied research center and forum dedicated to the research, practice and discussion of sustainable international investment. Its mission is to develop and disseminate practical approaches and solutions to maximize the impact of international investment on sustainable development. The Center’s work is organized around three main research areas: sustainable investment in mining and energy; sustainable investment in land, agriculture and food systems; and sustainable international investment law and policy, as well as issues related to climate change, human rights, energy transition and interdisciplinary research related to business and finance.

To apply for a summer internship, please send your cover letter, resume, and writing sample (in one file in order) by March 1, 2023 to Nancy Siporin, CCSI’s Executive Coordinator (nancy.siporin@columbia.edu). Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Please indicate if you are eligible for a work-study program (preferred but not required). The cover letter should include a clear list of the internship opportunities for which you are applying (you can include as many internships as you want).

Currently, paid summer internships are available for:

Developing financing pathways for energy transition engineering projects

CCSI will develop financing strategies and roadmaps for energy transition projects identified by the UN-convened Commission of Engineers for Energy Transition. CCSI will study financing options and hybrid financing solutions for specific project pipelines, such as those related to grid interconnection, electricity storage solutions, digitization and smart meters, large-scale renewable energy, distributed energy solutions, sector coupling and alternative fuels s project.

Making renewable energy infrastructure projects efficient, rights-respecting and environmentally sound

CCSI is seeking research assistance support to conduct a literature review of the permitting process for renewable energy and clean infrastructure projects to provide an analysis of the scope of problems and solutions identified in such literature and to identify key gaps.

Developing a SDG-based development plan for a coffee-producing region

Together with several partners, including the World Coffee Producers Forum, CCSI is working on developing SDG-based development plans for coffee-producing regions. Based on on-the-ground engagement in three Latin American coffee-producing regions, the team will develop a multisectoral, integrated sustainability plan and make corresponding financing recommendations. In addition to developing programs at these three sites, the team will also produce guidelines and tools for other coffee-growing regions to use in designing their own national sustainability plans. Fluency in Spanish is required.
