I’m so excited to finally share our basement gear storage/mud room. This is a project that Craig actually finished last fall, yes I’m late posting it here, but honestly he did it so fast it felt like a room was there all the time. In fact, it took a lot of work and it’s now a fully functioning mud room space for storing and organizing gear.
We don’t have a mudroom upstairs and have very little storage space on the first floor. We are also planning on getting rid of our garage and turning it into another bedroom/bathroom, so we really need a place for all our gear, bikes, etc. It was a dusty empty room, and although it was in rough shape, Craig knew it had great potential.
I absolutely love how it turned out and it truly is one of the most functional spaces in our house. We have a lot of bikes, snowboard gear and other sports gear, as well as all the coats and winter clothes that take up a lot of space. With this space, we were able to add tons of storage in our home using the existing square footage, which is also great for the budget. Not only do we use it for storage, but it’s conveniently located our hot tub So we can use it to change and hang wet swimsuits.
Here’s a breakdown of the process and what we use to organize all our gear, bikes, skis, etc.

previous appearance

I didn’t get a chance to get any real photos, since Craig worked so fast, so the drywall was already on the ceiling, and he’d plastered or added bead board on some of the walls. This still gives you a good idea of what it will look like. It’s a good sized room, but completely unfinished. It connects to the finished basement, which has a guest room and bathroom, as well as a small sitting area and desk.
Since we’re getting rid of the garage and don’t have any storage space on the ground floor, we need to maximize this space for winter gear, bikes, skis, golf clubs, tennis rackets, etc. We didn’t want to spend a lot of money on this space because it’s in the basement, but needed it to function.
IKEA Pax Storage Cabinet

We’ve had such great success IKEA Pax Wardrobe in our garage remodel Using them for storage in the basement is simple. In addition to these four cabinets, we have a set of cabinets on another wall for tennis gear and extra coats. We each have our own little room for snowboard gear, boots, jackets, pants, etc. It keeps us organized and makes finding things easier! I know that ordering things from IKEA can be tricky and a lot of things get delayed. We usually place orders in advance of the items we need, but this was also last fall, so things may have changed since then. These are something you can easily DIY build yourself and are a great choice for closet and storage when you’re on a budget.

Steadyrack bike rack

We have many bicycles. Craig is really into mountain biking and he has a huge collection in addition to my mountain bikes and normal city bikes. We needed a place to store all of our bikes that weren’t in the garage, and since this basement has a full walkout door, having them all in one place was a great option.Craig found These Steadyrack bike racks This is a great option for vertical storage. They can be used with regular bikes and fat bikes and are very strong.he used to Matte Black Masonry Paint on the wall (I think this looks cool). On the floor of this room, he used gray concrete floor paint. Using the bracket bracket, we can mount 5 bikes on this wall. marvelous.

kitchen area

We decided to install a kitchenette area as there was already a plumbing connection available in the room. Since we have a guest room in the basement, it was a nice touch to provide guests with a sink, coffee maker, and their own refrigerator. We also have access to an extra fridge for extra storage if needed.we got Galanz Vintage Refrigerators and Freezers From Home Depot. It’s cheap and works great as a secondary fridge. The top cabinets and Base cabinets unfinished, from Home Depot. He added pine beadboard to the walls and painted everything .
ProBoard Racks Ski Racks

Another great storage solution for small spaces is The ProBoard Racks Ski and Ski Rack. As you can see we can fit a lot of skis and snowboards on one small wall. I love that we can hang them there when we come in from the outside. They sell racks with 1-6 slots.
extra storage and seating

We have a shoe rack for extra boots and sneakers as we often go through this door from the outside. In addition to the Windsor chair and shoe rack We have windsor bench along the wall with maple nail rack For hanging wet swimsuits, towels and more. I’m very pleased with the result, we were able to utilize a space that is functional, functional and on a reasonable budget.slowly but surely we are doing this house is a home!
