RSVPs for the 2023 Earth Month Student Research Presentation
On Friday, April 28, the Climate Institute will host its annual student research showcase in partnership with Columbia University’s Office of Sustainability. The event offered Columbia undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students the opportunity to present posters sharing their experiences in projects related to sustainability, climate and the environment. This year’s student work covers a range of topics, including regenerative ecotourism, community engagement with negative emissions technologies, climate education in New York City public schools, the link between gender and climate finance, and many other interesting themes.
With a similar passion for sustainable development, the 2023 participants bring a variety of unique skills to their research, including GIS modelling, economic analysis and community engagement. They represent a wide range of disciplines and programs such as the Undergraduate Program in Sustainability, the MSc in Climate and Society Programme, the PhD in Sustainability and the MSc in Environmental Engineering, among others.
Iynul Rizwan, a student in the Undergraduate Sustainability Program directed by Climate Institute faculty member Jacqueline Kopp, shared her thoughts on the Student Research Presentation: New Jersey.
Several research projects this year have a global focus.Students created an open-access global population grid, designed a framework for equitable community engagement to remove ocean carbon dioxide, and wrote a chapter on gender and climate finance that will serve as a sustainable financeand conducted a literature review of wildfire research related to community loss.
Others focus more on issues of environmental justice in New York City or sustainability in individual countries. One such project, for Columbia University, is to create a student sustainability association in partnership with the Office of Sustainability.
Showcase kicks off with remarks from Columbia’s Office of Sustainability, whose leadership will share an update on the status of Columbia’s 2030 plan ten year plan outlines its sustainability goals, including an ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Jessica Plata, Assistant Vice President, Office of Sustainability, shared their vision: “Our goal is to raise awareness of Colombia’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner, and to provide a few examples of significant progress this year. Specific updates in major areas, including paving the way for electrified campuses, developing more sustainable design and construction standards, implementing creative transportation solutions, and contributing to new data-engaging students, faculty, and staff to foster sustainable The way the culture is driven.”
