Italian Word of the Day: Nanna (Sleep/Bedtime)


Most of you have probably come across these words sleep (verb sleep) and sleep (noun sleep) sometime during your Italian studies.But did you know that there is another equally common way to talk about sleep In Italian?

The word we’re going to look at today is Nanawhich is a cute, childish way of referring to sleep In Italian.

Italian Nana

It is a feminine noun, so it takes the following definite and indefinite articles:

  • Lanana = sleep
  • lullaby = sleep
  • Una Nana = Sleep
  • (the) lullaby = (some) sleep

Nana Considered a phonetic symbol term, it’s just a fancy way of describing a word that sounds like it represents.

In English, we also have some cute expressions related to children’s sleep, such as goodbye before bed, every night and sleepy byebut unlike these expressions, Nana Can also be used more broadly to refer to a nap. You can use it on adults too, but only in a fun way.
