TOYCON Philippines has grown from humble beginnings to an annual event that everyone on the Philippine events calendar looks forward to. Taking place at the SMX Convention Center in Manila from July 7-9, TOYCON 2023 aims to once again raise the bar for pop culture events as it reclaims its former status as a collector’s mecca and pop culture’s best location. Globe, co-organizers of this year’s event, brought their Globe Playboxx booth where people can unleash their inner child. A highlight of the event is the ongoing live-action adaptation of the beloved robot romance trilogy anime Voltes V. Produced by GMA TV, the Filipino production Voltes V: Legacy has received critical acclaim for its cutting-edge technology. The special effects and attention to detail are clearly a love letter from the makers to the source material. The cast of “Voltes V Legacy” and its producer, director Mark A. Reyes, will interact with fans on the TOYCON stage. GMA will also feature other stars to grace the event.
But that’s not all, as our home-grown talent takes on the much-loved Japanese franchise, and we also welcome some special guests from the Japanese tokusho (“live-action special effects”) universe. First up is Tetsuo Kurata, aka Robert Akizuki, who became known locally from his work on Kamen Rider Black and Black RX. With him, of course, is Kaizu Ryosuke who played the red mask in “Light Sentai Masked Man”. Anyone who grew up with these ’90s heroes will have fun seeing them up close, along with their props and vehicles, at the Toku Spirits booth.
Cosplay also returned to TOYCON on a large scale, holding arguably the most interesting and most watched Cosplay competition in China. Saturday’s Cosplay KO heightened the excitement for individual cosplayers, P20,000 cash prizes were awarded for Best Anime, and Sunday’s TOYCON stage came alive with the Anime S Cosplay World Stars Duo Local Qualifier and the Cosplay Pop Duo Contest. Celebrity cosplay photographer Jay Tablante also holds a cosplay photography workshop sponsored by Canon.
Fans will celebrate with immersive film screenings as Warner Bros prepares for Barbie The Movie and the highly anticipated DC superhero flick, Blue Beetle. Paramount Pictures also joined the fray, setting up a booth for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
TOYCON also attracts top local and international creators with not just one, but three creative zones: a Manga Zone powered by Komiket featuring top manga artists and illustrators, and two Toy Designer Lanes featuring the most Excellent local and international toy designers including Hit Actors, Pucky, Chino Lam, Unbox Industries and many more! At the heart of the event, of course, is the TOYCON Collectors Gallery, where approximately 80 toy collector groups will showcase their collections and host exciting panel discussions and custom toys, toy photography, best of show and best of toy collectors Group Prize Competition, sponsored by the Toy Collectors Association.
