  • Thaw it overnight. More working hours? Simply thaw frozen salmon in the refrigerator overnight before cooking.
  • Thaw quickly. Pressed for time? Place salmon in a ziplock bag and place in a bowl of cold water. Let sit for 30 minutes. If the salmon is still frozen, discard the water and refill with fresh cold water to ensure the fish does not reach room temperature. Repeat this process until the fish is completely thawed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do you cook salmon in the air fryer?

It depends on the size of your salmon and the air fryer you use! Because we cut it into 1-inch cubes, it cooks quickly.

While you can plan for about 5-7 minutes of cooking time, the best way to tell if your salmon is done is to use a meat thermometer.

The internal temperature should be 145°F. I recommend checking for 5 minutes first and then increasing the time as needed!

How to prevent salmon from sticking to the air fryer?

Grease the air fryer!

Before placing the salmon in the air fryer basket, spray the basket with a thick coat of cooking spray. I love the additive-free avocado oil spray. This helps prevent sticking while cooking and helps the fish crisp up.

Don’t have an air fryer? Here's how to do it!

You can definitely adapt this recipe to your oven. Did you know that an air fryer is actually a convection oven? Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, spread the marinated salmon pieces out, and bake for about 10 minutes, or until the salmon is cooked through.

Why put salmon in an air fryer?

good question! While I love making salmon in the oven or on the stovetop, the air fryer is definitely my new go-to method because it's basically mess-free. No oil splatter, no house smelling like salmon for hours…it literally is a breeze in 10 minutes and cooks to perfection every time!

What type of air fryer to use

This is definitely a personal preference! We've tried many air fryers over the years. We own and use this Basket typethis Instant Pot Air Fryer Accessories and this Toaster air fryer! They all work great, so all you really need to do is consider a few questions: 1) Do you want/need a new toaster? 2) Do you have space for new stand-alone equipment?

You should also know what size air fryer you want. Some may be very small, so you may need to air fry certain foods in batches.

Tips and Notes

  • Cut salmon into equal pieces. Whether it's 1-inch cubes, smaller or larger, make sure all salmon pieces are the same size. This ensures they cook evenly at the same speed.
  • Pat salmon dry before marinating. Removing excess moisture helps the salmon get nice and crispy around the edges.
  • Cook on a single layer. You want to give the salmon enough room to cook and get crispy edges. If the air fryer isn't big enough to hold all the salmon, cook it in batches.
  • Shake the basket halfway through. Redistributing the salmon helps it cook evenly on all sides.
