Sometimes, it seems that the whole world is a high school, and we all just want to stay fashionable.
I mean, it’s not about fashion, but about events and ideas.
An increasingly popular project: the socially conscious “land confirmation”.
Last month, Cornell University joined the current boom.
As pointed out Cornell Daily SunAt the opening ceremony of CU’s spring 2021, the announcer read a statement acknowledging “The university’s status in Gayogo̱ hó꞉nǫ’ (pronounced Guy-yo-KO-no) or the traditional homeland of the Kayuga people .”
This is an official recognition, as stated in the agency’s statement website:
Cornell University is located in the traditional homeland of Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ’ (Cayuga Nation). Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ’ is a member of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, which is an alliance of six sovereign states, with a history and a modern presence in this land. The Confederation preceded the establishment of Cornell University, New York State and the United States of America. We recognize Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ’s painful history of deprivation, and respect Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ past and present people’s continued connection with these lands and waters.
Just to be clear:
This land confirmation has been reviewed and approved by the traditional Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ leadership.
What is the purpose of this statement?
If the land is stolen, all the stolen people will be gone.
It would be good to be at fault; but just as the victim is not here now, Cornell was not there at the time.
This is not to say that schools can legally apologize to others.
If—if the land is still Cayuga—the area of the land or the proceeds from the sale will become the property of the tribe members now living, it seems that the college is just scratching it off: “We shouldn’t own this; you are. But we will. Keep it.”
On the other hand, maybe all of the above is wrong, and I will understand all this when I wake up tomorrow.
Either way, Cornell is following in the footsteps of many others.
Just like me cover In December, the San Diego Unified School District provided racial awareness training to its teachers.
A report from Christoper Rufo:
The training begins with “land confirmation,” which requires teachers to accept that they are colonists living on stolen Native American lands. Then they were told that they would experience “guilt, anger, indifference, [and] Closed minds” because of their “white fragility”.
Raleigh, North Carolina Wake County Public School System March well-trained educator Regarding the inclusion of critical racial theory. Metropolis Daily The forwarder said: “The February 2020 meeting was attended by more than 200 North Carolina public school teachers. The meeting began with’land confirmation’. This is a ceremonial recognition that indicates that the North Carolina whites were stolen from Native American land. Colonizer.”
Last year in Washington, the state’s largest public school system Educated teacher:
we will Want to admit that we are on the ancestral land and traditional territory of the Salish people on the coast of Puget Sound.
Back at Cornell University, this university caused a sensation through its multifaceted pursuit of justice:

As for land confirmation, its Purpose is pegged By alum:
American Studies Corey Ryan Earle (Corey Ryan Earle ’07) stated that this gesture is an important step for the university in the right direction. “The story of the indigenous community is part of the Cornell University story, although it has often been excluded from official history in the past,” he wrote in a statement to the Sun.
The gratitude at the graduation ceremony was the first time in the school’s 156-year history.
Professor Jolene Rickard, former director of the American Indian and Indigenous Research Project (AIISP), praised the new normal:
“I think this is an important posture of the institution, showing their understanding of the several continuing conditions for settler complacency or settler innocence, and how the space for us to work and live in countries such as the United States is actually formed.”
She crossed her fingers:
“I hope it can arouse people’s awareness that almost everywhere in the world, there are indigenous peoples who need to consider your development and planning methods.”
They do not intend to give up the land, but they may intend to make more statements:
According to current directors [AIISP] Kurt Jordan ’88, Anthropology, should be shown in all major university events, department websites, and official newsletters from Cornell University.
At the same time, a song that is unlikely to be sung in a future campus event:
-Alex
