NThe Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Ansi Pelosi rejected two Republican candidates as members of the committee investigating the January 6th Capitol attack. Pelosi said on Wednesday that out of respect for the integrity of the investigation and concerns about the remarks and actions of these lawmakers, they must reject Jim Banks and Jim Jordan as members of the panel. She must approve the nominee’s nomination.
The Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in the House of Representatives threatened that the Republican Party would boycott the committee and accused Pelosi of “abusing his power.” After a fierce debate on the committee in the US House of Representatives, McCarthy finally nominated five candidates for the agency on Monday. They are all considered supporters of former Republican President Donald Trump.
Jordan is one of Trump’s most ardent supporters. After receiving the nomination, Banks had stated that the team should not only investigate the attack on the Capitol on January 6, but also the “hundreds of violent political disturbances that occurred last summer,” such as “left-wing extremists.
Pelosi worried that the appointment of Jordan and Banks would affect the integrity of the investigation. Pelosi said there is a need to fully investigate who organized the attack on the Capitol and who paid for it.
The committee’s first hearing is scheduled for next week. Among other things, members of the police force, the Capitol and the police in the capital Washington will all express their opinions. The committee will investigate the background of the attack on the Capitol. Trump’s supporters stormed into the US Congress seat in Washington on January 6. Five people were killed, including a policeman.
