A truck carrying aerosol cans was arrested fire, Causing them to explode and forcing a period M11 is closed.
Traffic in both directions on busy highways is at a standstill, and it is recommended that motorists look for alternative routes.
The firemen put out the fire between the eighth junction Stansted Airport in Essex And junction 9 in Duxford, Cambridgeshire.
Essex Police said after the dramatic incident on Wednesday night that the A11 slip road had been closed.
Viv Higgins said that when the truck suddenly “burned”, she was driving behind the truck.
“A truck caught fire in front of us on the M11 highway…We are the first car behind it,” she told Standard.
“We are very scared that the driver did not run away. We just heard that he escaped. Such a relief.
“We are very close, and we are also very scared… We can back up for a while because there is more and more traffic behind us.
She added: “The truck keeps exploding. It’s really dramatic.”
Mrs. Higgins said that before the police arrived at the scene, two truck drivers drove in front of the fire to prevent the drivers from approaching.
“Two truck drivers drove ahead of us to stop people from trying to drive past it before the police came. It’s really smart to do this.”
The fire broke out shortly before 5 pm.
Dave Bond, manager of the Essex Fire and Rescue Service Station, said that after the explosion, the aerosol cans were “spattered on both sides of the driveway.
Essex Police said in the latest news that it is unlikely that the northbound lane will be reopened before midnight because the debris is still being cleared.
The southbound lane requires extra work from the English Roads Authority, so it may not reopen before 8am on Thursday morning.
