A New York judge said it was “inappropriate” to imprison a 20-year-old man who admitted to raping at least one teenage girl years ago. ABC7 report.
At the end of 2018, Christopher Belter, who was 17 at the time, was accused of treating four people between the ages of 15 and 16 at his home in Lewiston near Niagara Falls between January 2017 and August 2018. Of girls commit first-degree rape, third-degree rape and sexual abuse. ABC7 report.

According to ABC7, in 2019, Belt pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree sexual abuse, third-degree attempted sexual abuse, and third-degree rape, and was sentenced to a two-year temporary probation. The outlet previously reported Belt has pleaded guilty to multiple rapes, but it is not clear what the specific charges he pleaded guilty to are, nor how many girls it is related to.
On Tuesday, Niagara County Judge Matthew Murphy concluded that Belt, now 20, should be sentenced to eight years of probation and must be registered as a sex offender, ABC 7 said.
Belt was not sentenced to prison.
Murphy said: “I am in pain-I am not ashamed to say that I actually pray for the proper sentence in this case. Because there is a lot of pain. There is a lot of harm-many crimes have been committed in this case. ,” Murphy said, ABC7 reports.
“In my opinion, a sentence involving imprisonment or partial imprisonment is inappropriate, so I want to sentence you to a suspended sentence.”
Murphy had previously stated that one of the teenage girls made a “exciting statement” describing her having to concentrate on plants to distract her when she was raped, Buffalo News said.
“During the rape, he told her not to be like a baby anymore. She focused on the leaves of the plant while crying in the attack,” Murphy said of the statement, according to the Buffalo News.
“The defendant told her that if she stops resisting, it won’t hurt so much.”

One of the plaintiff’s lawyers, Steve Cohen, told ABC7: “I am very, very disappointed. I expect a different result today.”
“He has privileges. He comes from money. He is white. It is appropriate for him to be sentenced as an adult-it is unjust for an adult to escape these crimes,” Cohen said of Belt.
According to ABC7, as part of the probation, Belt must live with his parents, must not have contact with anyone under the age of 18, must not travel overnight, and undergo random polygraph and drug testing.
