South Africa's dry Tankwa Karoo region undergoes a dynamic transformation every year. AfrikaBurn is a Burning Man-inspired event that transforms empty plains near the Northern Cape border into a vibrant arts and community hub. AfrikaBurn runs for a week in late April and provides a platform for artistic expression and collective engagement.
The essence of AfrikaBurn
AfrikaBurn is a unique festival where participants are free to express their creativity and develop a strong community spirit. Unlike traditional festivals, participants known as “burners” actively contribute to the experience. From mesmerizing art installations and Vibrant themed campsite From exotic vehicles and captivating performances, everything is conceived and produced by individuals like you eager to showcase your artistry and share the collective experience. AfrikaBurn believes that everyone can be an artist and festivals become their collective broad canvas.
During this annual celebration, artists create cutting-edge art displays and performances inspired by specific themes. “Space” is the theme of 2023, and “creation” is the focus of this year. Artists showcase their creativity through a variety of artworks, such as monumental sculptures and mesmerizing light displays. The festival also features vibrant parades, elaborate costumes and exciting music, creating a temporary artistic haven that celebrates human talent and the united efforts that make it possible.
Sustainability and community
Respecting the environment and embracing diversity are important to AfrikaBurn. Participants followed the “leave no trace” rule and kept the desert in its pristine state. This environmental awareness reflects the festival’s emphasis on collaboration and community, creating unforgettable experiences while also protecting local ecosystems.
Felix Huettenbach: The Burner's Story
Felix HuttenbachA YouTuber and entrepreneur known for his innovative projects and charity work, he is an example of the diverse individuals involved with AfrikaBurn. The first time he attended Burning Man, he brought nothing but his backpack. However, the experience inspired Felix as strangers generously provided him with food and a place to sleep. Fast forward to 2024 and he has brought the Appa Art Car vision to South Africa and created jobs for the entire team.
Drawn to the festival’s emphasis on self-expression, Felix embarked on a challenging but rewarding project to build and operate a “mutated vehicle” Inspired by the beloved Sky Buffalo from the animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. His experience demonstrates AfrikaBurn's ability to inspire and empower individuals to turn their creative visions into reality.
AfrikaBurn is more than just a stage for artistic self-expression. Instead, it is a collaborative project created by the community. Thousands of people come together to create something extraordinary. Every element of the festival, from intricate artwork to unplanned performances, is the result of hard work and a collaborative spirit.
