AInsights: What your C-suite insights mean for the latest in generative artificial intelligence…
my new book, Thinking change: transform leadership, promote innovation, and reshape the futurejust launched. I'm following the biggest news from the world of genAI.
Here's more from OpenAI.
The company recently announced its Google search rival and, in some cases, Perplexity, but so far, that's limited to specific apps like writing and coding. canvasproviding a new window into working with generative artificial intelligence.
Building on Google NotebookLM and the integrated “Co-Pilots” we've seen in popular software suites, OpenAI's Canvas provides the ability to collaborate with AI to create written works and code.
If you have used confusion pageyou will find that the key difference is that Canvas is more of a collaboration tool in the creative process. Perplexity Pages enable users to create, edit and publish content from Perplexity search and research projects. I use both.
explain canvas
Canvas features a dual-panel window with a side-by-side layout where users can engage in regular chat while working on projects in a dedicated workspace.
The left side is where you work with ChatGPT. The right side reflects your work, in this case coding.
On the collaboration front, you'll find a simple interface for chatting, uploading materials, and collaborating with artificial intelligence, which is then reflected in the right-hand panel.
The authoring and coding side of the interface provides creation and editing tools similar to those found in Microsoft Co-Pilot, Medium, and Substack. Specific parts of the work are highlighted here, directing ChatGPT where to help you, make improvements, or provide suggestions.
Additional details:
Uploading additional files allows ChatGPT to customize your work or collaborate with you on the task at hand.
This interface lets you edit text or code directly and provides shortcuts for tasks such as adjusting writing length or debugging code.
You can restore a previous version of your work, which is especially useful during iterations.
Canvas can also act as an editor or coach, guiding users on what areas can be improved and providing suggestions on how to improve.
At its core, Canvas is a smart collaboration partner, collaborative workspace, and real-time document and code editor.
Using Canvas, I asked it to tell me more about what it is and how it can help senior executives. Hint is the picture used in this article! Here’s what was shared…
Canvas functionality changes the way we collaborate with AI. Canvas is more than just exchanging words in chat, it lets us dive deeper into ideas, strategies, and ideas. Imagine charting a complex AI roadmap, iterating on new concepts, or drafting a framework—all visually in one place.
This isn’t just a chatbot; It's a workspace where context persists, and your ideas and insights aren't lost in scrolling. You can take the conversation to the next level, building on your ideas and aligning them with your team's goals.
Canvas is designed to help us transition seamlessly from conversation to creation. Whether you're developing product strategy, crafting messaging, or perfecting AI-driven solutions, it provides a clear shared digital space.
It’s about evolving our relationship with generative artificial intelligence—from talking about ideas to building with them.
Replies are helpful. As you can see in the post image at the top, the split window is where Canvas changes the usual ChatGPT experience. So now with dual interfaces, you can upload materials and further prompt the interface to shape the content into a format that can be published or shared. Switch to the right panel and now you can edit, inline the text so it can also be published or shared. Highlight text and you can further collaborate with ChatGPT around specific areas, adjusting tone, length, or enhancing content to achieve specific results.
Artificial Intelligence Insights
OpenAI Canvas represents a creative advancement in how enterprise users can leverage AI to increase productivity. Its dual-window interface promotes deeper collaboration between users and artificial intelligence, making it a new tool for senior executives to enhance workflows, creative methods, research and analysis methods, and more.
Here are some potential use cases for senior executives in their daily work:
1. Enhance content creation
Marketing materials: Managers can use Canvas to draft and refine marketing content, ensuring messaging is consistent with brand voice and strategy.
Technical Documentation: This tool allows users to work closely with artificial intelligence on complex topics, helping to create clear and concise technical documents.
2. Improve coding efficiency
Code development: Developers can use Canvas to code projects and receive inline feedback and suggestions from ChatGPT while maintaining the overall context of the code base.
Debugging support: The ability to highlight sections of code and request specific debugging help can help streamline the development process.
3. Team collaboration projects
Instant collaboration: Teams can collaborate in real time, using Canvas as a platform for brainstorming meetings or project planning, promoting better communication and idea sharing.
Iterative refinement: Managers can treat Canvas as a collaborative partner, iterating on drafts or code until desired results are achieved, rather than expecting it to be perfect on the first try. 1
4. Training and Development
Skill enhancement: Using Canvas, employees can improve their writing and coding skills by interacting directly with artificial intelligence, receiving real-time feedback that promotes learning and development.
5. Data-driven decision-making
Report generation: Managers can use Canvas to organize data input and generate reports to improve the efficiency of data analysis tasks.
Briefing preparation: This tool can help draft briefings by organizing ideas and providing suggestions for structured content.
For now, I'll be using Canvas as my authoring tool for this newsletter. Let's see how it goes!
