10 seasonings
You can add almost any spice you like to this Air Fryer Kale Chips recipe. Remember that in addition to the 1 tablespoon of oil and ½ teaspoon of salt in the base recipe, you’ll need to add your favorite spices. Here are 10 different kale chips to try:
- salt and vinegar – Add 3 tablespoons of white vinegar to your base ingredients to make salt and vinegar chips.
- lemon garlic – To make Lemony Garlic Kale Chips, add 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 2 teaspoons lemon zest, and 1 teaspoon garlic powder to the kale.
- Chili Lime – In addition to the basic kale chip ingredients, make Chili Lime Kale Chips with 4 tsp lime juice, 2 tsp paprika, and 1/2 tsp garlic powder.
- tacos – add 1 tbsp taco seasoning.
- barbecue – There are two ways to make grilled kale chips. All you need to do is add 3 tablespoons of BBQ sauce to the base ingredients. Alternatively, you can make BBQ seasoning using 1/2 tsp smoked paprika, 1/4 tsp garlic powder, 1/4 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp paprika, 1 pinch paprika, and 1/8 tsp ground mustard. I prefer the BBQ sauce option, but it does take longer to crisp up.
- nacho cheese – Add 3 tbsp to make these kale chips cheesy cheddar cheese powder (or nutritional yeast), 1/4 tsp cumin, 1/4 tsp garlic powder, 1/4 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp paprika, and 1/4 tsp paprika.
- Sour Cream Onions – When making sour cream and onion kale chips, add 2 tbsp buttermilk powder1/2 tsp onion powder, and 2 tsp dried parsley to the rest of the ingredients.
- hot – If you want a little heat, use 2 tbsp powdered cheddar cheese, 2-3 tbsp hot sauce and 1/2 tsp garlic powder and base.
- pasture – Just 4 teaspoons are all you need to make ranch kale chips ranch seasoning.
- indians – add 1 tbsp Indian seasoning.

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Kale Chips
Air frying makes these kale chips crispy and delicious in less time. Follow these tips for the best kale chips every time.
- Wet ingredients take more time. If using a wet coating, they will take an extra 2-5 minutes in the air fryer, depending on how well coated they are. Also, if you wash the kale well and don’t dry it, it will take longer (an extra 2 minutes or so) to crisp up in the air fryer.
- batch cooking。 Clumped or folded leaves will not crisp evenly. Make sure the kale leaves are unfolded. Cook in batches, if desired.
- Stir by hand. The best way to ensure each kale chip is evenly coated/seasoned is by hand while mixing. Even when I mixed it with a spatula, the seasoning wasn’t there.
- Seasoning is added before cooking. All seasonings are best when done right before air frying. I tried adding the dry mix afterwards, but they didn’t stick. Also, when added afterwards, the kale chips will break down into very small pieces during the mixing process.
- Potato chips should be crispy. If the kale still has any chew left, return to the air fryer and roast for another 1-2 minutes. The finished kale chips should remain crisp.
storage instructions
- shop: In order for chips to stay crisp, it’s important to let them cool completely before storing. The best way to store kale chips is to put them in an airtight container. I like to put mine in mason jars or tupperware containers. You can also put them in a zippered bag if you prefer. Store at room temperature.
- Meal Prep: Kale chips in the air fryer are a great make-ahead snack. Just make them and store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days.
- freeze: I do not recommend storing leftovers in the refrigerator. Moisture from freezing can make the chips soggy.
