It’s easy to miss a Jain ghat if you’re not paying attention. Located in a narrow lane by the main river in Varanasi, it’s easy to walk past this small temple without knowing it’s there. But if you’re looking for a quieter, more peaceful place to explore in Varanasi, the Jain Ghat is worth a visit. The temples here are dedicated to Jainism, one of the four major religions of India.
The Jains are known for their extreme asceticism and pacifism, and their temples are some of the most beautiful in all of India. Jains are no exception. On my last trip to Varanasi, I had the opportunity to visit a Jain ghat and it was one of my favorite experiences in the city. If you are planning a visit to Varanasi, be sure to put Jain Ghats on your list. Worth a visit.
Overview of Varanasi and Jain Ghats
Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and it’s easy to see why. From the ghats along the Ganges to temples and markets, there is always something to explore. One of my favorite spots in Varanasi is the Jain Ghat. This ghat is dedicated to Mahavira, one of the most important figures of Jainism. It’s a beautiful place and a great place to watch the sunset over the river.
What to see and do in Jain Ghat
When you visit a Jain ghat, be sure to admire the architecture of the temple and the view of the Ganges. The Western Ghats are a popular site for Hindu cremations, so you’ll witness ceremonies taking place throughout the day. Observe these rituals with respect and silence. You can also take a dip in the holy river or take part in a puja (prayer ceremony). If you’re feeling adventurous, explore the ghats further upstream. There’s a lot to see and do in Jain Ghat, so be sure to spend some time here during your visit to Varanasi.
Where to Stay near Jain Ghat
There are many good accommodation options near the Jain Ghat in Varanasi. I recommend Mahalaxmi Guest House, just a few minutes walk from the ghats. It’s clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. Also, the staff are super friendly and helpful. Another good option is Arya Guest House. It is located on the banks of the Ganges with beautiful views of the river. The rooms are clean and spacious and the staff are very hospitable. Finally, if you are looking for a more luxurious option, then I would recommend staying at the Surya Hotel. It is one of the most luxurious hotels in Varanasi and is just a few minutes walk from Jain Ghat. The rooms are modern and elegant, and the service is superb.
restaurants and cafes
If you’re looking for a place to grab a bite before or after your visit to the Jain Ghat, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby. Most are small, family-run restaurants serving local specialties such as chaat, samosa and kachori. One of my personal favorite restaurants is Shanti Vihar Restaurant & Café, which serves delicious North Indian vegetarian food. The restaurant is close to Jain Ghat, so it is ideal for those looking to refuel after exploring.
Another good option is Jain Ghat Café, a small café near the ghat that is open from sunrise until late at night. They serve delicious hot drinks like chai, lassi and coffee, as well as snacks like samosas and pakoras. No matter where you choose to dine, you’ll find plenty of options around Varanasi’s Jain ghat. So be sure to stop by any of these restaurants or cafes for a delicious meal before your next adventure!
shopping and nightlife
When it comes to shopping, Jain Ghat offers the curious traveler a variety of options. You’ll find small shops selling trinkets and souvenirs along the river, as well as shops selling traditional clothing, wooden handicrafts and religious items. Don’t forget to bargain! If you’re looking for something a little more modern, head to the nearby shopping malls for a wide range of products, including electronics, clothing and food. There are also several markets in the area where you can buy everything from spices to jewelry. For nightlife lovers, Jain Ghat has several cocktail bars with live music and dancing. Music festivals such as Kashi Utsav and the Ganga Aarti Festival are also popular events in Varanasi at certain times of the year.
Safety Precautions for Exploring a Jain Ghat
Whenever you travel to a new city, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and stay safe. Exploring the Jain ghats in Varanasi is no exception. I recommend dressing conservatively (no shorts) and bringing a printed map in case you get lost – or an experienced guide. At night, stick to well-lit areas and consider hiring an Uber for transportation after dark. Knowing which areas are off limits is also important. If a sign says it’s private property or off limits, don’t go there — it’s the best way to avoid running afoul of local law enforcement or getting lost in the middle of nowhere.
Finally, if someone offers you a souvenir or service, politely decline and leave if needed. Although the locals are friendly, it’s best to be cautious as a new tourist exploring a new city. Jain Ghat is a good place to visit if you are looking for a peaceful and spiritual place in Varanasi, Ghat or want to learn more about Jainism place. Do take it easy – the area is a Jain pilgrimage site and visitors should show respect.
