Two-time Olympic champion Andy Murray withdrew from the men’s singles competition at the Tokyo Olympics.
The Scot won the gold medal in London in 2012 and became the first person to defend the Rio Olympic singles champion four years later, but will not seek third place.
Murray’s retirement was due to a slight strain on his thigh. The 34-year-old is advised not to participate in singles and doubles matches. His singles position against Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime in the first round on Sunday was replaced by Australia’s Max Purcell.
On Saturday, Murray and Joe Salisbury performed well in the men’s doubles. They defeated French Open champions and second seeds Nicolas Mahut and Pierre Hugues Herbert.
“I think we have the potential to become a very good team, and I think today’s result shows this,” he said after that game.
“Doubles are always tricky, because sometimes the game will boil down to a few points. I think we are the well-deserved winners today. We have created quite a lot of opportunities. But not every doubles match is like this.
“I think if we maintain the same attitude and prepare hard, we have a chance to do well.
“It’s not easy, we are going to play against the German combination next [Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz] We are looking forward to that. “
Before the Olympics, Murray revealed that after being eliminated by final semifinalist Dennis Shapovalov in the third round of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, he had to be dismissed by his five-year-old daughter Sofia.
