The statement added: “We want to assure all spectators that because we have adopted strict procedures at the London Stadium, this registered case will not come into contact with anyone visiting the venue. We believe that we have complied with all health and safety requirements.

“The safety of our customers remains our top priority. Everyone in the London Stadium and the hairspray team is very sorry, which means these performances cannot continue.”

Customers who have booked cancelled tickets for the show can rebook or request a full refund.

Singer Bauer, who played Edna Tebrard in the musical, wrote on Twitter: “For everyone who bought tickets for Hairspra​​​yLondon this week and our excellent company, they feel very sad. They were frustrated by not being able to resume the show before July 14.

“But the beat just pauses, never stops!!! I miss you xxx.”

After watching the premiere night at the London Coliseum Theatre, Mr. Dawden praised the hairspray as “awesome”.

He wrote on Twitter: “It’s great to watch! I know the theater has to endure many strict restrictions, but we are making progress due to the advent of the vaccine, and I can’t wait to see the theater full again soon.”

Although some theaters reopened after the coronavirus restrictions were relaxed, they can only perform in front of a reduced audience.

Boris Johnson has stated that almost all restrictions will end in England on July 19, when the theater will be full of audiences.
