Wellington-New Zealand extended the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown on Friday, as the number of cases continued to rise and the Delta-type epidemic spread from Auckland to the capital, Wellington.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that the initial three-day lockdown will expire on Friday night and will be extended for another four days.
She said that New Zealand is still working to assess the scale of the outbreak in Auckland this week, ending the country’s six months of no community transmission.

We just don’t know the full scale of this delta outbreak. All in all, this tells us that we need to continue to be cautious.
Ardern said that all cases, including the Wellington case, are related.
“This is important because it means we are starting to build a picture of the edge of this cluster,” she said.
“At this stage, we have no random cases.”
Only 26 of New Zealand’s population of 5 million have died, but only about 20% of the population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
The latest outbreak can be traced back to a traveller who returned from Sydney earlier this month, although it is not clear how the virus entered the community through quarantine control.
