Mobs in the port city of Rotterdam burned cars and threw stones at the police. The police responded with guns and water cannons, protesting Coronavirus disease The measures became violent on Friday night.
Police spokesman Patricia Wessels told Reuters: “We fired a warning shot, and some people shot directly because the situation is life-threatening.”
“We know that at least two people were injured, possibly as a result of the warning shooting, but we need to further investigate the exact cause,” she said.
Some people circulated photos on social media that they said someone was shot and killed by the police, but the police said that although they saw the video, they did not know how the man was injured.
Hundreds of people gathered to oppose the government’s plan to restrict people with “coronavirus passes” from entering indoor places, which shows that they have been vaccinated or have recovered from the infection.
The pass is also applicable to people who have not been vaccinated but have a negative test certificate.
The police issued an emergency decree in Rotterdam, closing public transportation and ordering people to go home. The police said that water cannons were deployed and police on horseback made accusations to disperse the crowd.
The authorities also called on bystanders and those who recorded images of the riots to send the video to the police for further investigation.
The Netherlands re-implemented some lockdown measures in the first three weeks last weekend to slow the resurgence of the coronavirus infection, but the number of daily infections remained at the highest level since the pandemic began.
