Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for bacon shrimp, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- shrimp – Make sure they are skinned and sinewed, but keep the tails if you can. I used jumbo shrimp (26-30 per pound), but king prawns (31-35) or king prawns (21-25) would work too. You will need to adjust the amount of bacon slices based on the amount of shrimp you are using. I don’t recommend that the shrimp be smaller than the large ones, because if they are too small, it will be difficult to wrap the shrimp in the bacon. You can learn more about choosing shrimp in my article Garlic Butter Shrimp postal.
- butter – To control the saltiness of this dish, I used unsalted butter. You can use salted butter, but you may need to omit the salt from the recipe. If you want a dairy-free option, olive oil will work too, but the sauce will be thinner and less tangy.
- Honey – I use unsweetened honeybut regular honey works too.
- seasoning – you need to garlic powder, paprikaand sea salt. The paprika has enough heat for my taste, but you can add black pepper or even cayenne if you want it spicier.
- bacon – The star of the show! Avoid thick slices of bacon, as the bacon won’t crisp up when the shrimp are cooked. Turkey bacon will probably work, but precook times may vary.
- toothpick – Hold the bacon in place.

How to Make Bacon Wrapped Shrimp
This section shows how to cook bacon-wrapped shrimp, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique to help you get a feel for it.For full instructions, including amounts and temperatures, see recipe card below.
- Make the marinade. In a medium bowl, whisk together melted butter, honey, garlic powder, paprika, and salt. Transfer 1/4 cup honey butter marinade to another small bowl and set aside.
- Marinate the shrimp. Pat the shrimp dry, then toss with the marinade. Cover and set aside to marinate.

- Pre-grilled bacon. Place bacon in a single layer on a baking sheet baking tray with rack. Bake in the oven until cooked through but still soft and pliable. Let it cool enough to handle, then stack the strips and cut them in half crosswise.
- Assemble the bacon-wrapped shrimp. Wrap each piece of shrimp with bacon slices cut in half, secure with toothpicks, and place on a rack over a baking sheet.

- grilled shrimp. Place the bacon-wrapped shrimp in the oven, 6-8 inches from the grill, until the shrimp are cooked and the bacon is crisp.
- Brush with sauce. Brush the reserved honey marinade over the shrimp. Serve with additional marinade, if desired.

Tips for the Best Bacon Wrapped Shrimp
While this recipe is super simple, here are a few tips to ensure your shrimp are tender with the crispy bacon:
- Foil for easy cleaning. If desired, you can line the pan with foil (under the rack) for easier cleanup.
- Precook the bacon for the appropriate amount of time. Shrimp cooks quickly, so if the bacon isn’t precooked long enough, your shrimp will be rubbery when the bacon is crispy. On the other hand, if the bacon is overcooked, it will become brittle and you won’t be able to coat it. The ideal balance is one where the bacon already has some fat but is still pliable.
- Use a metal rack. Opt for a wire rack on your cookie sheet instead of a regular baking sheet (I like this set). This enhances air circulation and allows excess bacon fat to drip off, making the bacon crispier, as in Oven Bacon.
- Monitor while grilling. This step is critical to getting crispy bacon, but be careful as the bacon will burn quickly.

Recipe Variations
There are so many ways to make these bacon-wrapped shrimp your own! Try these variations:
- Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Shrimp – The chili powder already adds some heat, but for spicier sliced jalapenos are served on top of the shrimp and wrapped in bacon.
- cream cheese – If you want to balance the heat, put a dollop of cream cheese on top of the shrimp before wrapping them. It’s best served cold so it doesn’t leak too much.
- barbecue – Bacon-wrapped shrimp brushed with BBQ sauce (I prefer Sugar Free BBQ Sauce) before baking.
- Asian – Replace half of the butter with coconut aminos or soy sauce and add 1/2 tsp minced ginger. A drizzle of Sriracha sauce also completes the combo.
storage instructions
- shop: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
- Meal Prep: Follow the recipe steps, but do not bake. Instead, assemble and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before grilling. This does not work with acidic marinades (they will turn your shrimp into Shrimp Ceviche), but since this one doesn’t contain any acid, it works great.
- Reheat: Place the shrimp on a baking sheet (an additional rack if possible) and grill 1-2 minutes per side, until warmed through and crispy. You can also reheat in the oven for a few minutes Air fryer The temperature is 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- freeze: Place bacon-wrapped shrimp in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until firm. Then, transfer to an airtight container or zip lock bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
