Biden nominates Kumar and Song in the fifth round of judicial nominees

Sharina D. Kumar

The White House announced on June 30 that President Joe Biden nominated Chief Judge Sharina D. Kumar of the Indian American Circuit Court to serve as a federal judge for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Shalina has served on the Oakland County Sixth Circuit since 2007. She was appointed Chief Judge of the Circuit Court by the Supreme Court of Michigan in January 2018.

The White House stated that Kumar will become the first South Asian federal judge in Michigan.

Prior to serving as a judge, Kumar worked as a civil litigation lawyer in private practice from 1997 to 2007. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1993 and from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1996.

Biden also nominated Jennifer Song to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Sung is a member of the Oregon Employment Relations Commission, a former union organizer and labor lawyer. If confirmed, she will become the first AAPI judge on the Ninth Circuit in Oregon.

Sung is in private practice in Portland and San Francisco. She received her JD from Yale Law School in 2004 and now lives in Portland.
