Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best burrata toppings, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- olive oil – I prefer extra virgin olive oil (I like this brand), but you can also use regular olive oil or even avocado oil.
- balsamic vinegar – A classic choice with an added touch of acidity. You can also try red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, or sweet and tangy raspberry vinegar.
- garlic powder – Adds aroma and saltiness. You can substitute 4 cloves of fresh minced garlic if you prefer.
- tomato – I like to mix cherry tomatoes in multiple colors with full-sized heirloom tomatoes for texture and visual interest, but any tomato will do. In summer, buy tomatoes from the farmers market for the freshest flavor!
- Brata – This cheese is usually packaged in liquid form, so drain it first. Then, use a sharp knife to slice or tear it into pieces for salads. Fresh mozzarella would work as a substitute, but it wouldn’t be a burrata salad anymore. 😉
- fresh basil leaves – Basil adds a fresh, vibrant element to salads. Fresh herbs work best here, I don’t recommend using dried herbs.
- Balsamic Glaze – Adds sweetness and flavor and pairs perfectly with creamy burrata.it’s really quick to make Balsamic Glaze At home (just use the same vinaigrette above), but store bought works too, or you can omit it entirely.
- sea salt and black pepper – Kosher salt can also be used here, I recommend fresh black pepper.

Burrata vs. Mozzarella: What’s the Difference?
Burrata has a soft and creamy center, while mozzarella is firmer and rubbery. Both are mild cheeses made from cow’s milk, but the interior of burrata is filled with soft, viscous curds and cream.
Recipe Variations
- Peach Burrata Salad – For sweetness, add 2 to 3 ripe peaches (or other stone fruit), thinly sliced.
- Burrata Arugula Salad – Just add arugula to taste and mix with other ingredients. You may need to increase the amount of dressing. Red onions or shallots also make great additions to this version.
- Watermelon Burrata Salad – Omit the tomatoes and add 5-6 cups of watermelon cubes.
- turn it into a pasta salad – Chop the ingredients into bite-sized pieces. Then, toss with cooked and cooled pasta of your choice. Finally, dress as usual, adding more flavors if desired. This also works for raw Zucchini Noodles!
storage instructions
- shop: Burrata salad is best made fresh, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. Store without dressing if possible.
- Meal Prep: Make the dressing, cut the tomatoes, and store them individually in the refrigerator until ready to assemble.
