Caesar Dressing Ingredients
This section describes the ingredients in Caesar dressing, how to choose the best toppings, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- mayonnaise – This is the basis for the Creamy Caesar Dressing recipe.I use homemade mayonnaise (It’s easy to make using an immersion blender with eggs, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, salt, and avocado oil), but you can also use store-bought if you prefer. If you’re concerned about raw eggs, plain Greek yogurt can also be used as a substitute, but the flavor will be a bit different.
- olive oil – This will emulsify the ingredients of the Caesar dressing.other oils, such as extra virgin olive oil or avocado oilwill work too.
- lemon juice – Adds a classic full-bodied flavor.I often use bottled lemon juice For convenience, but fresh lemon juice tastes even better.
- fish sauce – Don’t skip this! Anchovy paste, a classic ingredient in Caesar dressing, adds so much depth—you don’t get a fishy taste in the end result. I like to use the sauce instead of canned anchovy fillets because it’s easy to measure and can be stored for later, unlike a can of anchovies.
- Worcestershire sauce – Adds umami. If you don’t have one, you can substitute it with coconut aminos or soy sauce substitute.
- garlic – I use fresh garlic for flavor, but you can use 3 tsp canned garlic or 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder for convenience.
- sea salt & Black pepper – smell.
Variation: Add Dijon mustard!
I didn’t include it in this basic Caesar salad dressing recipe because the mayonnaise I made already had it, but feel free to add 1-2 teaspoons of Dijon mustard for extra depth.
