Easy Blackened Fish Recipe
While this Cajun blackfish may sound, look, and taste complicated, it’s actually simple! All it takes is to mix some of my spices indian seasoningRub it over the fish and cook it in a hot pan for a nice char and crispy crust.
The roasted spices have a smoky flavor that makes the fish look “blackened” while the middle of the fillet remains soft and flaky. This easy meal is healthy and easy, yet tastes amazing…and it’s ready in 18 minutes total!
What does black fish mean?
Blackening refers to a cooking technique in which something is coated with a spice mixture and then quickly seared in a pan. The result is a nice toasty flavor and a dramatic finish with a crust.

- Cod fillets: Fresh is the best! If you have everything frozen, be sure to thaw them first.
- Avocado Oil: searing.

what fish to use for this blackfish recipe
We love Cajun seasoning with cod, but really any fish will do. Even some fish with stronger flavors like salmon will do. Cajun seasoning is bold enough to go with it, so feel free to switch it up.
Here are some other options:
- haddock
- Catfish
- bass
- flounder
- salmon

Does the blackened fish taste like burnt?
Absolutely not!In this case, blackened does no burnt meaning. Blackening is just a cooking technique.
Toasted spices can sometimes look burnt, but they just take on an unmatched smoky flavor!
Tips and Precautions
- good season. Make sure the spice covers the entire surface area of the fish. We want that crazy flavor in every bite.
- Use fresh fish. I definitely prefer the texture and flavor of fresh fish, but if all you have is frozen, that’s fine too. Be sure to thaw it first.
- Do not overcook. This probably goes without saying, but keep in mind that the fish will cook quickly. Don’t overcook or the texture won’t be as good and the outside may actually be burnt.
