Canada defeated Sweden in the final to win the women’s gold medal Tokyo Olympics.
After two overtime games, the two sides won the game with a penalty kick, and the two sides drew 1-1. Julia Grosso scored the winning goal for the Canadian team. The two teams exchanged points back and forth, and then the penalty kick entered a sudden death.
Sweden started the first half strongly, putting pressure on Canada from the beginning of the game, and most of the time was spent on Canada.
Their attack in the first half paid off, and Stina Blackstenius’ goal in the 34th minute gave Sweden the lead at the end of the half.
However, in the second half, a Swedish player fouled Canada captain Christine Sinclair, which resulted in a penalty kick for the Canadian team. Jessie Fleming succeeded and evened the score in the 67th minute.
Fleming also scored a penalty early in the game, helping Canada win the semifinals against the United States.
The Canadian team brought the Heat after that goal and launched a fierce attack on the Swedish women, although they did not score again in the second half. The game entered overtime and the two sides fought 1-1.
The two teams looked high-spirited in the first phase of overtime, and both worked hard to score goals, but neither succeeded.
Sweden performed even better in the second stage of overtime and had several near-misses in the Canadian Open. However, the game was still a tie and entered a penalty shoot-out.
In the penalty shootout, Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Rabe made several impressive saves. The two teams made multiple shots, but the teams tied the ball after five kicks. So, it died suddenly and Rabe made a huge save, giving Grosso a chance to win the game for Canada.
Canadian women have never entered the Olympic football finals before. They won bronze medals in Rio and London, and it is their mission to change the color of the medals at this Olympic Games. They defeated the American team in the semifinals and entered the gold medal battle.
Sweden did not change the color of the medals at this Olympics: they also won the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
