The Canadian envoy to the United States stated that just because the two countries have been working together to manage their common border does not mean that they will always move in a perfectly symmetrical manner.
Kirsten Hillman said that both Canada and the United States have every right to make their own unilateral decisions regarding COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Hillman and Arnold Chacon, the interim US ambassador, attended the bilateral relations panel discussion hosted by the Wilson Center Canadian Institute today.
These comments are their first public speeches since Canada promised to return fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents to the border starting on August 9.

However, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security extended its restrictions on Canadian land borders until August 21.
Chacon said he believes the two countries are in “a good place” and their bilateral discussions on the border will continue.
