Canadian women’s eight-man rowing team wins gold medal for the first time in nearly 20 years Tokyo Olympics Friday.
Canada won the highest award before New Zealand and China. The latter two teams tried their best, but the Canadian team proved unshakable as soon as the game opened.
The female players — Lisa Roman, Kasia Gruchalla-Wesierski, Christine Roper, Andrea Proske, Susanne Grainger, Madison Mailey, Sydney Payne, Avalon Wasteneys and Kristen Kit — must work harder to reach the finals.
Despite finishing second in their Heat, the team had to re-qualify on Wednesday and eventually finished second there.
Olympic medal count: This is the person who won the most medals during the Tokyo Olympics
Canada’s last medal in the women’s eight-man rowing event was the silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics. The last time they won a gold medal was in Barcelona in 1992.
After winning the bronze medal in the women’s double match on Thursday, this marked the Canadian team’s second rowing medal in Tokyo.
This also continues the winning streak of Canadian female athletes, who have won every medal in these Summer Olympics so far.
Canada has now won three gold medals, including the women’s 64kg weightlifting and the women’s 100m butterfly.
